I could use some help with a carplay MMI box

I purchased a unit from amazon it is by a company called Lexxson. here is the link to the unit I purchased.

https://lexxson.com/collections/carp...to-mirror-link

I did not get the item shown, but I am not sure yet if that is good or bad. I might have recived a newer model. I am having a hard time finding out what I got and if it will even work in my car with the harness they provided. the harness looks different than most I have seen, and I have been emailing the company, but they seem to be having a hard time understanding it is the wrong harness (or i think it is). the last communication telling them it was either the wrong harness or I needed instructions on how to install it, was answered by saying they would email me the software updated needed to fix the problem. not sure how they are going to email a different harness, if one is needed. I am trying to keep from taking everything out of the car just to confirm it is not the correct harness. I will post some pictures of what they sent. any help identifying the unit, or if I do do in fact need another harness, and what that harness might be would be greatly appreciated.

Now for some pictures.

Notice it has a BT antenna and a 5G antenna. I am only able to find one other unit online that looks like this. more about that later.

Here is the other side of the unit and the part number of the cable harness.

more of the harness I recived.

and another.

here is the cable I was expecting.

and from another manufacture it looks like I might have gotten a IDrive cable

and here is another picture that might be the cable I got and not the can cable as I expected to get.

and finally a picture of another unit that has both a bluetooth and 5G antenna that looks like the one I recived, though it has a can style harness. it is also being sold for a Mercedes. Mine is for a 2013 BMW X5 E70 with CIC

Thanks for the help!

I think I found a installation video for a unit that uses the same harness I have. I am going to pull out the radio on my lunch break and see if it does indeed work with my car.

Ok I tried to install it today with no luck. Taking the radio out was super easy in this car. But sadly I could not get this unit to work.

First not only is the cable labeled wrong for the lcd screen and radio, the one that plugs into the radio is rotated by 90 degrees. This not only doesn’t allow the connector to fully seat, it keeps the radio from fitting back into the dash. Here is a pic of that.

Now the next problem is I can’t get CarPlay to come up of the screen. I am assuming because I have to press a button on the idrive controller. The problem is the idrive controller does not work. There is a dip switch setting that says default is off, but if idrive joystick does not work turn on. For me it doesn’t work in either position. Next issue is if I use the settings for the dip switches printed on the box, I get an electrical error and car can not be driven. There was something about the transmission. If I turned off dip switch 3 this went away. But it says I have to have dip switch 3 on. In the end though even if everything else worked I am still not able to use it because the radio will not fit back in due to that connector being rotated 90 degrees.

So I got to thinking, they probably intend to have you pull out the screen, and hook the lvds cable there. Then the radio would still have the 90 degree connector correct on it, and the cable that says to lcd, would actually go to the lcd. Just one of those things that some simple instructions provided would have went along way. I do find the cartoon of a person crying on their website under the documents section to be appropriate. I am sure that is the typical response most people have when they try to get support...

Quick update the manufacture confirmed that the cable hooks to the screen and not the radio. They sent a picture of a page of their instructions. Gee those would be helpful. I requested a copy and for them to confirm the dip switch settings.

I did get a picture with installation instructions. It is simple, but would have been nice if it was provided in the beginning. I did not get dip switch setting from them yet. If I am correct my switch settings should be 1-5 Off, 6 on, 7 off unless it does not work, and 8 off if I use the oem mic. though it looks like if switch 7 is on, then maybe switch 3 or possible switch 5 needs to be on. not sure.

Ok I made some progress. I took some video and pictures, but in the end now that it is working most are irrelevant. I still have some issues, not sure yet of they will be resolved.

First problem I had was either I got this screen, or it tried to go to the correct resolution and then would immediately go to a red screen.

I tried the switch settings printed on the box. none worked correctly. Also my Idrive knob failed to work no matter what jumper settings I used.

Finally a after I turned on switch 4 the screen resolution worked correctly. The printed switch settings clearly show switch 4 off. here are the switch settings that worked for me.

My Idrive controller still did not function.
I found this little contact on the end of a connector on my harness.

after removing it the idrive controller works as it should. this was never mentioned in their instructions.

I now have working Carplay wired and wirelessly. Audio through Aux works fine.

My current issues. the LVDS cable is very touchy. with the MMI box setting on the floor, it works fine, but if you move the box very much at all the screen goes red. the connection on the cable is tight, just can't be moved or wiggled. I am afraid even if I am able to get it mounted a slight bump on the road could cause the screen to stop working requiring me to take the cover off and wiggle the cable. the other issue that I might be able to fix, is I currently do not have enough cable length in the harness to reach from the Idrive controller to mount the MMI box under the glove box. I have to take the center console back out and make sure the harness is not caught. hopefully I will gain the extra 4-6" required to comfortably reach a mounting location.

Also the mic is not currently working, but I am sure it is due to not connecting the aftermarket mic. I will verify that later, but I don't think it is a problem.

Ok I can not get the microphone to work with CarPlay. I installed the Mic that came with the unit and left my factory mic alone. There is 2 places on the CarPlay box that says mic. I tried both of them with no success. I then remembered the dip switch that said mic. I set it to aftermarket Mic, then tried again. Still didn’t work plugged into either place. Then I found some settings in the menu of to turn the oem mic on or off. Again I tried it both ways. Still didn’t work. I did get another harness with this unit that looks like you connect it to the factory mic, then it has another plug that connects to the factory Mic harness. I of course didn’t see it until after I put everything back together. If no one has any advice, then I guess tomorrow when I can see again, I will try that.

Just found out that the back up cam is not working correctly. Black screen with the CarPlay box generating the lines and a squashed car. Though after I took it out of reverse the camera with factory lines came on. Maybe switch settings?
