I am thinking about picking this sub up. Any other recommendations or do i "need" anything else in addition to the sub?

I know bsw speaker upgrade would be great, but is it necessary? Do i need a new amp?

06, stock sound system, no dsp.

You need an amp to power the sub. I paired mine with a Rockford Fosgate 300 amp and it sounds incredible. Takes a bit to tune it all in but when it's done right its great.

Actually there is a guy on here selling custom made boxes just like the JL and the BSW for $150 shipped. He is taking orders...do a search....then you just add your own sub speaker and an amp like I did and you will save a ton of $....email me direct if you have any q's. I have the factory non dsp stereo, no factory sub and did all of the work myself in under an hour....sounds incredible...i look for reasons to be in my car now. [email protected]

Thanks bdavis, I was just about to chime in on this. If you're still looking to upgrade your audio, send me a PM and we can chat. As mentioned, I make enclosures almost identical to the ones from JL, minus the $550 price tag. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be making these, but I do have 5 available as of now (3 inquired about but not sold yet, so 2 up for grabs indefinitely). Due to the amount of time involved making them and cost of materials however, I had to change the price to $200 shipped.
Let me know if you have any questions.

My buddy and I upgraded my sound very easily.

I slid the front passenger seat all the way forward. Unscrewed and removed the grill. Tied my line into the terminal there, ran a line level converter from that, ran the rca's under the door trim and under the side of the rear seat and through the space along the rear side. I tied the remote wire into the cig lighter in the right rear deck, then tied in the power to the battery terminal.

The 300w Kenwood mono amp and my 10" JL W1 in a truck box fit perfectly in the spare tire well. The sound is totally different and I love it. Easy and cheap upgrade.

I went back and forth between BSW and JL Audio. Today, I finally decided to go with BSW throughout - ordered the Dice Duo, speaker upgrade, and sub package. The more I think about it, the more comfortable I am with the decision. My last install that required a shop was a disaster and ended up much more expensive than it should have been. I'll post a review when the BSW kit is installed.

just out of curiosity why can't one add a sub to the factory amp, after all the DSP models come with a sub that's hooked to the factory amp correct?

^Good point/question.

I noticed when pulling the rear deck speakers (four subs) in my 740il that the mids and highs became crisper. Maybe because the amp wasn't working so hard. In my car I went with a
JL-W6 10" sub / JL class D 500x1 Amp with stealth volume control, which is mounted on the column so it's easy to adjust and out of the way.

For the X5 since I did not want a bulky box and amp in the rear I have a Infinity BassLink 2, and trust me it will blow you out of the car if bass is what you want. The key feature aside from being relatively small, is that you can remove it easily when you need the extra space, or need to access your spare tire or battery.

I unfortunately have the business radio and CD player, which as of late some of the buttons are not working. (cant change the time for instance) So im going to perhaps go aftermarket with the head unit as going with the factory 16x9 nav unit is pricey for the 10 year old+ tech.

Basically, new door speakers and this sub is the way I went for my best practical use.

Cheers!
