aftermarket stereo,

So i go to a shop to get my deck installed today...and no go....

i have factory nav with the cd changer in the trunk. i didn't think i had a factory amp, but turns out i do?

they order me all the parts i need, the bracket, harness and antenna...upon taking out the factory unit, they find the harness is totally off from what they had ordered me....strange? they say they can't do it, call metra for tech support...they say it can't work...with what they have? so prob have to order new harness? how difficult is this? I need some input from everyone here......

all i want is deck to support my ipod touch, i dont care for nav...but man this seems like a nightmare for audio installs...i even look myself at the harness in the factory unit...its soo small, and the harness that was ordered looks huge....the shop is even like in ah?

They probably expected that the car had a traditional audio harness in the dash. That is not the case for navigation-equipped cars. Furthermore, your car probably has DSP (do you have the "DSP" option in the man menu of the nav screen?) If you have DSP, then then they will need to replace the amp and speakers too.

The audio harness terminates in the trunk for your car. Specifically, the radio is mounted next to the battery and the amp is under the CD changer. Replacing the audio system in a nav-equipped BMW typically entails running all new wiring for the new head unit. I am not aware of an aftermarket conversion harness that will do the job.

How much iPod control do you want? You can install an aftermarket device like the Dice or Intervee II that will give you pretty good iPod control. Or, you can upgrade your radio module to gain a generic Aux input for the iPod. I use Aux input for my car.

No dsp option in my unit.....i'm baffled by all this...i just didn't want a spaghetti factory going on under my carpet of my truck....looks like i'm gonna order the aux input....but when i called the dealer, he wasn't sure if it would work on my car...he said it was for production dates of oct/2002 and later...mine was a july production.....

The dealer is probably right. If you have a 2002 model year car, you will not have a radio that supports Aux input. You could upgrade your radio, or you could consider a device like the Intervee II.

yeah i think i might have to lean towards one of those kits....i just didn't wanna spend 300 on a kit when i can spend a bit more and get a deck...that was really my concern...now i'm stuck with a dash kit cause the shop had to order it...argh...lesson learned.....anyone need a dash kit...give me whatever, even though the shop here charged me 60 bucks for it, the metra kit....didn't have time to snag one from ebay.....
