First thing is to try deleting the pairing then reactivate bluetooth pairing on the car, that should do it.

Follow the manual instructions.

right here is what the book says,

press and hold down the buton above the storage compartment (it has a persons face on it and some lines coming from the mouth) hold for 3 seconds then turn key to position 1 in ignition keep holding button for further 3 seconds.

'bluetooth pairing ' should appear on the display or monitor.

Then press that button again (with the face) and hold for at least 10 seconds and until you hear a triple acoustic signal, ie bleeping.

the display or monitor should say 'paired devices deleted'

to finish this process turn the ignition key to 0.

All mobile phones should now be logged off.

once done get out the car lock it up then wait a few minutes and open up and do the bluetooth pairing process.

MAKE SURE .... You have the pairing code for when you 'repair' the phone with the car otherwise dont do the above until you have it, get it either from dealer or your cars paperwork.

Your better off having some use of the phone than none at all which is what will happen if you cant reactivate your/mates phone without the code.

A small point on the post above. The button with the face that is being referred to for device deletion must be pushed for 10 seconds on the phone cradle itself and not on the steering wheel !!

If you dont have a phone cradle fitted in the car then the only other way to delete the device (without taking the car to the dealer) is to attempt to pair an additional 4 BT phones. The BMW system can keep track of 4 phones, so once all 4 are paired, pairing the 5th will overwrite the 1st ... if you see what I mean.

Hope that makes sense ... BMW didn't explain it very well in the phone documentation .... good luck. I bet you are glad you updated your friends s/w now .... ;-)
