Unhappy Please help - ver28 upgrade attempt has shafted my SatNav :(

Hi all

I REALLY hope some good person(s) on here can help me. A few weeks ago I attempted to upgrade my Mk III satnav to a later firmware version but due to a combination of poor CD/dodgy drive I ran into all types of problems so gave up and bought a Mk IV unit off EBay.

Got it in and running, worked fine. A couple of weeks ago bought the 2007-1 UK/Europe Map DVD with Speed Cameras, has worked a treat since.

Today though, deja vu I attempted to upgrade the firmware to ver28 (was on ver 27) and it went wrong.

Unlocked the car, waited for things to stabilise then turned ignition to position 1. Ejected the Map DVD and inserted the firmware CD. After a couple of minutes of blank screen it came up with the familiar "Software is being installed...this will take 6 minutes...do not turn off ignition" message so I waited a while then got a screen stating "Defective CD in drive, please eject and click OK" Went to the drive and it had already been ejected, clicked on the right-side button on the front unit and after a short while, blank screen.

I left the car ignition in the same place and re-inserted the Map DVD. Nothing, not even the red "activity" light on the drive.

Afer leaving it quite a while I ejected the map DVD and inserted an older firmware version CD (ver27) but still nothing.

Eventually, I turned off the ignition and turned it back on, now have the light blue screen that has the other options (TV, Computer etc) but NO SatNav. Subsquently I've tried both ver27 and ver28 CD's but get nothing, not even the activity light on the drive.

Feel really bad because very similar happened that led me to upgrade to a Mk IV drive and only tried the upgrade because I thought a) it surely can't happen twice and b) DVD-based units are supposedly much more resilient to that type of problem - obviously wrong on both counts

Can you please suggest what to do? I read once somewhere that a battery disconnect/reconnect is a good place to start but I'll be honest and say I don't even know where the battery is on the X5.

Seriously thinking of ringing the dealership Monday morning and asking them to fix/ugrade firmware as I seem to have had no luck in doing it last 2 times but not sure how picky they'll be after an attempt to do it off a 'backup' CD bought from Ebay has caused the initial issue.

Sorry for the long posting, wanted to get all the details in there, your help would be very much appreciated.

ALI

Try a battery reset. Take of the + and - pole off your battery and hold them off for about 30 seconds. I Heard you also can put the 2 wires together if they are not connected to the battery but I didnt tried it.

Thanks spetter, next question though please; where is the battery located on X5's and also, once I do this, what next?

Do I have to re-install to an older version or can I re-burn a (hopefully) working version of the latest firmware and feed it in after re-connecting the battery?

Thanks

I only know that the battery of a E46 is in the back behind a panel... Maybe you can check your manual. I don't think that your firmware is corrupted, but you just need to reset all electronics of your car by doing the battery reset...

Burn a fresh disk at the lowest possible burning speed using a high quality CD-R and re-try loading the OS. The MkIV is much more forgiving when an OS load goes bad then the MkIII. There's a very good chance you can recover from this.

Thanks guys, appreciate your help.

I will try the battery reset today, have burnt a copy of ver27.1 using quality media at 1x burn speed using IMGBurn.

X5 Sport - I'm in Watford, just north of London, thanks for your very kind offer, hopefully will get it revived one way or another!

Thanks again all, will update post accordingly.

UPDATE: Disconnected the battery, left the wires off for a while then reconnected. At reconnection I could hear the satnav unit kicking into action but when I tried the firmware upgrade (after leaving it for a while to initialise then settle) still nothing

Not only that though, now the ABS, DSC and DBC lights are staying on on the dash after starting the car

I'm guessing the latter might be blown fuses but typically, after opening the fuse box in the glovebox, no tweezers present so can't pull them out to check/change

I'm giving up. Going to call the dealership tomorrow and get them to take a look. Will tell them I tried a firmware upgrade off backup CD from a mate and disconnected the battery after it went awry to try and initialise the drive, take it from there.

Thanks all for your help.

Your lights should go out on their own as soon as you drive the vehicle a few meters.
