This is all very confusing, and interesting at the same time.

Whiterabbit - can you confirm that you've tried a couple of DVD map discs from other units and they don't work, but the CD map disc you currently have works fine? What map disc version do you have? As Brian-BMW points out, given your car's date of manufacture and the information (4-1/00) you have on your screen, you have a Mk IV unit running the latest software. If it won't read a DVD map disc then there's a fault with it.

The BMW Navigation System FAQ topic will tell you all you need to know about dates, versions etc. as well as pictures of the different units.

Unless the Technicians know something this forum's Members don't, which is doubtful, then they're basically trying to baffle you with bulls**t to avoid paying the cost of a replacement unit.

i have a 2003-2 uk high cd - this works fine

i ahve tried a 2006-1 europe high dvd and 2008-2 europe high dvd and these both act as if i have no disk in the drive - the satnav says something along the lines of: "please insert cd/dvd" - yes it does mention the word dvd.

the satnav was already updated to 4-1/00 before i got it - i suppose its part of the bmw used approved process to update it to the latest version.

i think everyone including bmw agree its a mk4 - what they are saying is some mk4s are just cd based but since im now being told here that the actual satnav computer is within the same box as the drive, i find this a bit hard to believe, especially since no-one else seems to have ever heard of this combination - cant see bmw just doing a one-off. the dealer also said they had an advisory from bmw saying that some mk4 have cd only drives so ill try and get them to send this advisory to me as well so i can see it.

if the drive comes out again ill make sure i write down all the serial numbers and codes written on it.

I call total bull, until they show a TSB with this information on it. I have read a lot of BMW navigation posts, and I have never, ever heard of anyone with a MKIV that did not have a DVD reader mechanism.

It is very simple.

You have a Mk4 nav unit with a faulty DVD laser.

the drive has 2 lasers (all DVD drives do) and the CD laser is still OK, but the DVD laser is not working

It is impossible to have a Mk4 nav without a DVD drive, as the mechanisms come in one type only: CD/DVD.

Jochen, do you think that the logic7 DSP could be retro fitted from the z4 into an e46? they both run i-bus right, would it just be a question of connecting up the correct inputs/outputs from the loom to the DSP?

Yes you could fit it. It would need to be coded to match the E46 acoustics. I don't know if logic7 was ever a standard option on the E46. If it wasn't you won't be able to code it to get the acoustics right.

Bummer, I don't think it was ever in the e46 (I don't think any DSP was ever in the e46?) that said, I wouldn't mind a go if I could pick the DSP up cheap...

this is what i thought it would be but not according to bmw

according to bmw this is not the case the dealer has spoken to bmw uk who have said that it is: unchanged from how it came from the factory and that the dvd logo means it has dvd capable hardware.

ive asked the dealer to send me the advisory or whatever it is so i can see it and theyve said they will send it.

im going to speak to bmw directly next since the dealer isnt getting anywhere. i need to find someone at bmw who is "technical" so they can explain how the satnav has "dvd capable hardware" but no actual dvd drive and how previous satnavs didnt have "dvd capable hardware" - since it sounds rubish to me but its currently being relayed by people who all point out they are not "technical".

btw the reason i was at the dealer was because when i collected the car, bmw uk still hadnt sent the second key for the car (guess the previous one was lost or broken) so i showed them the various issues i ahd at the same time when i came to collect the key (key has to be matched to the car). the rear diff had a small oil leak that bmw approval process missed but was flagged as an advisory when they did the MOT so thats due to be sorted and theyre paying for all that.

That's exactly what I said as well.

So BMW agree with me.
That makes me right, and BMW right

It is a DVD nav. Full stop.

And the DVD part doesn't work because it is BROKEN.

Mate, why ask them? They have already told you: IT HAS DVD HARDWARE, IT IS A DVD NAV

The reason it doesn't work is that it is BROKEN

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. BMW have already told you clearly it is a DVD nav. Accept it.
