Another eb@y story about a nav retrofit - help please..

Hello,

I am asking for some help regarding this situation that I am "stuck" in.

I am in a really frustrating situation while trying to retrofit a used navigation system (bought through eb@y) to my X3.

I ordered the used kit and had the parts delivered a couple of weeks ago (flip monitor, Mk4 unit, CID / cd, gps antenna, and a brand new retrofit harness with instructions). I acted a bit stupid to not ask for part numbers before ordering and transaction was offered outside eb@y. Being an absolute newbie as an eb@y buyer I agreed.

Went to my local BMW dealer to have the units fitted to the car. At first they resisted on installing it saying that:
1) They don't know where the units came from and probably afraid of what I was bringind them....origin etc.
2) The parts numbers were from different years and might not be compatible with each other (although they were all past X3 items from 2005 and on - checked with realoem). I have finally accepted the responsibility to have the items fitted on my car and if the kit does not work they would not have to be blamed for (warranty still remains valid).

Now the installation is finished, all the cables are in place. I got a call from the dealer yesterday saying that the system does not work due to the CID/CD (Radio / CD player/ Nav control) unit not responding. Actually they said it didn't power on, but they could see it in their diagnostics tool as a unit. So they suggested that I should exchange the CID with another one - newer. They installed the regular CD player I had before, so I could hear music at least....and of course I paid for the installation.

I then go back to the guy that sold me the set, explained the situation and he thinks it is a matter of encoding, although he politely suggested that if encoding doesn't work out he could exchange the unit for me.

I am now left with a system that it is installed in my car and it does not work. Screen is black and useless, mk4 disconnected and I have my old radio on the dash.

Any ideas about the problem or suggestions what to do are very welcome.

Thanks in advance

First, list all of the part numbers here. That might provide some clues.

I can not tell from your description what the dealer thought was working or not working. The key to the whole thing is the MKIV nav computer. The rest is just a dumb input/output device. So, the problem could be a bad MKIV, an inproperly connected MKIV, or a MKIV coded for a monochrome nav versus a color nav.

Do you know anyone else with a nav system that you could test your MKIV in their car?

Thanks very much for your reply Brian.

The dealer says that the problem lies 95 % in the CID /CD player because he could not have power or data on the unit even though he could "see" the CID unit in the BMW diagnostics computer. So he did not try to encode the system and left it as it is now.

My Part numbers are:
CID /CD: 6512 913 2254-03 (11/06) also BMWNRR200-02 on same sticker.
MKIV: 6590 6 942 908 -03 (06/04) There is also this BMWM01S along with other data on the label. Do you suspect anything?
The screen is already installed in the car and I do not have the part number on hand but it is the flip type monitor only used in X3 and Z4. The screen flips up when I turn the key, but remains black of course.

The harness used was brand new in a BMW box and plastic bag 61 12 0 390 114. I guess they just plugged the end to the MKIV computer correctly.

I don't know anyone in my area yet with a MKIV unit, but I was just wondering - are these units "Plug & Play"? I mean can we swap units with a friend without coding them to the car? What is the encoding process used for?

Thanks again.

AFAIK BMWM01S is the code for monochrom mk4 (BMWM01S - M for monochrome, C for colour), but you can recode the mk4 to colour with Jochen's software: NAVCODER - cheap but very useful piece of software.

+1 to zeronoo's post. The MKIV is most likely the problem. The dealer could re-code the unit to color, but most dealers do not know how to do this. Get NavCoder.

Your nav is configured for an E46 RadioNav display (Mono).

It needs to be changed to Colour to work with the X3 CID

NavCoder can change the Mode, the dealer probably cannot

Get NavCoder here:

Interesting... Coding the MK4 unit to color will "wake-up" the CID unit and screen? I thought that coding the MK4 from mono to color was a secondary task. Wouldn't I be able to see some picture on the screen even though the MK4 was coded as mono? The dealer said that the CID unit was not responding. I would like to check myself too, as I was not in front of the car when they finished the installation. Would it hurt the system if I unplug the standard radio and plug back the CID/radio and MK4 in order to test it myself? Do I have to remove the battery pole before the swapping?

Also regarding navcoder:
As an absolute newbie in the nav area, may I ask how will I connect my laptop with navcoder to the car? Is it through the I-bus interface (reslers.de)?
Anyone knows where I can find the interface plug in the X3?

Yes, 100% correct.

No. When the nav is coded for Mono, the colour RGB video outputs are switched off and no video appears. Therefore, nothing can be seen on the CID screen. Additionally, the nav believes it is not working with a CID, therefore does not send the "Please open" command to the CID.

The dealer may have simply referred to the fact that the CID did not open up or display a picture, which is exactly what happens when the Mk4 is coded for Mono.

You won't hurt anything by plugging in the Mk4 and CID
I generally do this without removing the battery, but if you are a newbie, disconnecting the battery is a good idea.

You connect the laptop using the Resler interface to the CD changer connection, which on an X3 is very easy to access.

You will find that
a) The dealer will not know how and will not be able to change coding from Mono to Colour
b) Changing the Coding yourself may be the simplest and cheapest and quickest approach for you

Ask in the forum for other users with NavCoder that live in your area - maybe they can help and recode the nav it for you.

Wow!!! That's simply amazing. Thank you very much especially to Jochen for the expert advice and the rest of the members that have contributed. I hope this coding will solve my troubles, as the dealer could not help in this matter. So, I guess I'll have to order the i-bus interface and register Navcoder to do the trick. By the way, what would I benefit for encoding the navi system to the car with the BMW dealer's GT-1 after I code the mk4 from mono to color?

I'll be back in a couple of weeks until I receive the I-bus interface and post back the news....

@ KiwiJochen: The GR stands for Greece by the way - Thank you very much for offering to visit you.
