OK, I also found a white cable with a red line and yellow dots in the blue connector of the mk4 unit. Should I tap this wire to connect to the i-bus pin of the reslers interface? Also, is it safe to use the cigarette lighter plug in the cargo area of my X3 to connect the +12v and GND to the interface?

So the car coding is still required, although there is a 80% chance you will have no functional difference on the X3.
I am not sure, as very few people have retrofitted nav to the X3.
My X3 retrofit worked 100% first time without the GT1 option coding (although I have since paid to have this done). I used a secondhand colour MkIV with v29 software which I think included a fix for the flip-up screen.- worked first time.

Recoding MkiV to colour should fix problem. You could also try resetting the region info for the CID radio to Europe.

Great news! I think my case is solved. I have managed to code the mk4 to color and everything works as expected for the time being.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Without your help (...and software) this project would have remained unresolved.
I was very happy yesterday until this morning that I found my sunroof leaking......due to heavy rain!!! Can't get any rest with this car.......

Anyway, thanks again for everything!

Congrats for solving the problem. This forum really has some experts which are willing to help when there are coding-issues with the MK4. That's great. I am glad you now have a fully functional MK4.

As far as the leaking sunroof is concerned: Maybe there's an ibus-code you can send with the Resler-Interface, to fix it...

Check the drains - one on each corner of the sunroof. Front drains should run water to behind the front wheels (pour a small cup of water into the drainage channel and look) - there are rubber nozzles up in the wheel arches that get blocked.

The rears drain behind the rear wheels and above the bumper somewhere - haven't found them yet ... but of they get blocked, you get a very wet car!
