Wondering if you can provide some insight regarding what happened? I have a MKIII and MKIV and have updated both a "few" times. I do recall updating the MKIV the first time and getting a blank screen (panic) and trying it again afterwards successfully. I never did figure out why I got the blank screen but when I shut off the car, disconnected battery then connected battery and attempted again it worked. I always heard of sometimes issues with the MKIII NAV units but not so much with the MKIV units. I did do the update so that I could read the hi density disks.

To reset the navigationsystem it seems to bee better, when youŽll only disconnect the navi for any minutes.

So you wonŽt lost your calibration data from EGS and DME and other else.
(EGS = automatic gearing adaption)
(DME = Motorelectronic)

Basically what happened was an upgrade that got an error, followed by an upgrade that never rebooted (first down to v26 and second to v32). I waited a while on the v32 reboot and then turned off the car. After that it would just blink the power light and spin the disc, but not read anything

I have tried disconnecting the unit for extened periods of time with no effect. I think the unit is stuck - I know it is hard to kill MK4s, but I think I must have timed it right to do so.

Are you at a blank/black screen?

Yes, that is what I have just a blank screen.

Tried downgrading rom v32 to v24 and the screen went blank. Radio/CD work fine. It took some fiddling to get the copied v24 out but it came out eventually. I've ordered an OEM v32 hoping to rescue the NAV from it's crashed state. Any other advice?

As mentioned it could be just a HW problem. Try maybe using one of those CD rom cleaners; or better yet take the whole unit apart and watch it and see how its tracking (moving the head); if it keeps searching then you probably do have a HW problem. I believe somewhere out there in Internetlandia there is a DIY on how to fix the drive replacing the laser. You might be better off taking the whole device apart; relubing the laser head tracks and cleaning the laser head manually and trying the whole process again.
