White Vertical Lines on Bordmonitor : Possible to Fix?

X5 Gurus,

When I bought this '02 X5 there were 2 vertical lines on the monitor, a 3rd red one has since appeared (see attached picture).

I can live with the lines, but if there is a cheap fix I would go for that option.

I have 3 questions for anyone who may have had this experience:

1) What might cause this to happen?
2) How common is this?
3) Is there a fix or do I have to buy a new monitor?

Thanks!

Hi,

Cause: environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, vibration, screen cleaning chemicals)
Occurrence: about 1% will develop this issue or similar problem after 3 years
Fix: the LCD module is replaceable, repairing the bad module has more chances of causing further deterioration.

Tough decision.

Who makes the display? If it's Alpine, they fix them for some flat rate like $180.

The display module is made by Sharp.

You mean the actual screen is made by Sharp. Isn't the widescreen "assembly" made/assembled by Alpine?? There have been a few posts on boards recently where guys sent their unit to Alpine for repair. BTW Great work on your MKIII reflashes. Also do you know Terry Gray in the Melbourne area. He is "farnarkler" on the e38 boards.

Thanks.

Yes Alpline makes the entire product and whilst the screen assembly has "Alpine" on the rear housing label, they buy the LCD module from Sharp. Alpine would simply remove the faulty LCD module and install a new one. I actually have the new Sharp LCD modules.

By the way, I do know Terry Gray aka "Farnakler". He's a big supporter of my work.

The pictures distributed about how to disassemble an e38/39/53 cluster to repair the LCD screen without pulling off the pointers is actually my concept.

Most readers a still guessing what happens after that disassembly step!

You mean the one Edwin has been discussing? With the drilling and rubber strips? VERY interesting! Say hi to Terry, I helped him get his Hybrid VM.
