Yes its on open thread about "Can i output the GPS map to another monitor? " so feel free to help out with this.

If you have a seperate problem, raise a new thread. Thats how forums work.

Anyway, back to the topic now.

I put an combo video interface between the NAV and the HU. I have a CarPC which taps into that. You can output video from the PC separately. So I guess I'm injecting another video source. You can take the IBUS NAV data into the CarPC and use it for another GPS application writing some basic code. Another easier way is to just add another GPS antenna to the PC and run a separate application for GPS.

The secondary displays would have a higher quality video than the RGB HU display this way. I'm not sure I've read anywhere about adding addition RGB displays relating to tapping into existing configuration. The very old MarkI's had their own computer and source of video but those didn't mix too well with the newer MKIII-IV displays. I tried that a number of years ago.

Adding to this mix (off topic a bit) you can add a 3G modem to the computer and surf the web or even automate some processes. It would be easier to tether your phone to the PC as there's already another GSM device (for help etc) connected/on - not sure if this device ever powers down when your driving. I can the device chatting on the IBus when the vehicle is on.

Have you got some more details on that? Sounds like i could go along the same lines.

Not interested in a seperate GPS application, or using the IBUS on a PC, only interested in replicating the HU on the rear screens

The interface that that fits between the NAV and the HU allows you to input Video for AUX video but doesn't replicate the HU video. I am not aware of a way to replicate the HU video. Putting another HU in series with the front one sounds like it "may" work but I don't know what the IBUS would do with two HU devices.

You will need RGB plus the Sync line as there is no SoG (Sync on Green) out of the Mk4. Because of the way the Phono plug/socket works, the centre pin is always the signal pin, and the outer 'ring' is the ground because on metal-chassis equipment the socket outer is directly bonded to the metal case.

ok - were does the sync go? I've found some RGB to Composite convertors, with three phono inputs (so i will run 3 x ground and 1xR 1xG and 1xB to these inputs)

Cheers

You need a converter that has RGB+COMPOSITE SYNC or RGBS - you can't use RGsB (RGB + Sync on Green) or RGBHV (RGB+ Horizontal & Vertical Sync). You will need to hunt for the correct standards converter. You can't just leave off the sync signal as the screens will just roll or more likely just show a completely 'corrupted' picture.

Exellent - now just to find the right convertor. thank you

I'm going to guess that in a fleet car / limo style of sorts BMW has already done this type of engineering maybe even a bit more detailed than what you are trying to do.
