4:3 screen mods?
I have a spare screen and am toying with gutting it. |

Such as? What kind of more powerful or more modern update are you looking for?
The screen is just that, a dumb device. Many people upgrade the 4:3 display with the higher quality 16:9 display. Other than that, there is not much else to change. Now, moving to the trunk, you can do lots of modernizing updates. For example, how about updating to the DVD-based MKIV navigation computer. While you are at it, you can upgrade the radio module to add new features and Aux input. (You can also add Sirius in the US market.) If you want something louder, you can pull the amp and install an aftermarket amp with more juice.

I was thinking more like gutting it for an Atom running carPC software.

You could do that mate, not seen it done on a 4:3 but have seen it done on the 16:9.
You could add an ibus interface and use the buttons too.

Absolutely would want to keep the buttons, they are really well made and the build quality is why I'm not just getting a DVN-E46.
I'm just a little bit worried that CarPC software, while powerfull, requires a lot of maintainance to keep it running smoothly. A TomTom with FM reciever would be another option, or grafting in a later model (E60?) nav. This is starting to sound like a pipe dream already. |

I have heard that it **should** be possible to install the later type nav system, (with screen nav comp, radio and controller), it would run independent of things like the on board computer and some other bits but it should work.
