Funny you ask that, because that was going to be my next question to you. Can you take a photo of your dealer's expression when you tell him what you did, right after he says that there is no such retrofit, etc.... ?

At the end of the nav retrofit instructions from BMW it should say something about coding.

He said very dryly "You have been busy". They clearly know it can be done but don't have appetite for it.

You are right, the coding instructions are in the guide. Thanks for reminding me.

No prob. I'm curious how much they'll charge you for the programming. Let us know.

Hey, this is the nation's capital, nothing gets done without handing over a firstborn, an arm or a leg, or possibly all of the above.....

Cutting the dash opening

Here is a picture of the piece that came out.

This square normally contains the radio/CD player unit. Underneath sits the MID.

Am wondering if I should put my MID and radio/CD up for sale, I hate to sell stuff that came with the car but there seems to be no good reason to keep them as they can't go back in anyway...

Retro coding, reset airbag, check out 2 other problems. Charge was one hour labour. Quite ok I thought.

They did not give me any grief but then again, I worked with this SA over the last 4 years and he knows by now that I understand pretty much most issues and I do all my own oil changes, tire and brake work. (And there seems to be a ton of that I might add... :-)

Been using the NAV and associated equipment for 6 months now and am delighted by it. The BT handsfree is quite usefull too.

Not as smooth as the system in my brother's new Audi A4 but it will do fine. Only thing I miss is the ability to pop in an SD card as the Audi can but such is life.
