No MKII GPS menu option on screen ?
I just got an e39 from 2000. The GPS is an MK2. But there isn't any "GPS Navigation" option on the screen. I tried updating the firmware with no luck, nothing happens. The CD ejects only when the GPS unit wakes. What's the issue and is it possible to repair it ? thanks |

Note : I have the TV module (analogue), and I saw it can show the same "Menu" on the screen than the GPS mk2... but without "GPS Navigation" option.
So maybe this is why I still have an image. I tested the procedure to access Service Menu, and I only have the TV modul, no GPS informations. I wonder if the CD lens only is broken, or the whole GPS mk2 module thanks Last edited by jean019; 10-29-2013 at 04:26 PM. |

try disconnecting the tv tuner and just leave the mk2 connected to see if you still have a display on the screen, if you don't then your mk2 is possibly shot and needs replacement

I disconnected the mk2 then reconnected it ... then sometimes it shows the GPS menu, the original map sometimes works, but when I try to update the firmware, the CD is not recognized. I wonder if this is a CD player issue or the whole mk2

if you have the nav computer but it is not showing up on the display (menu generated by the TV module, appearance is different from menu from nav), your nav is not on the iBus.
it can be off the iBus for a million reasons - first off, no power to the nav computer... then, a broken wire, could be actual iBus wire or any other wire... could be broken or could be shorted to another wire/chassis... it could be an internal problem of the nav computer - say, when it is cold, it is working, when it is hot, it is dead... you need to narrow it down as much as possible... or... just replace it and get an MK4. do you have 16:9 or 4:3 screen? an MK4 computer should support both types of screen... also, check some repair services - there is a guy somewehere in UK, Baris (or Boris?) who has a good reputation in fixing these things... |

The idea is I just bought the car (a 2000 540), the GPS is old, if I find some quite cheap way to repair it, I do it, but taking an mk4 would be too expensive for my use of the car.
I'm not english not even in the uk Thanks for your answer ! |

lol.... i am not english and very far from UK - further than you... lol...
but that guy, Baris, is serving folks worldwide, the US, the AUS, etc... another option, to go with the aftermarket Nav system... but, since you have a TV module, do you have the TV module's AV leads wired up in the car? you can use the AV IN to feed the aftermarket navigation picture to the car... it is a bit more involved technically but does not require much modifications to the car, just a video-in-motion hardware, which is a plug-n-play, and the unit that can produce the desired video - I am in process of getting my smart phone into the system... you can see some of the posts in that reference on our forum... good luck with whatever you decide to do - the E39 is one of the best looking cars on the planet!!!! lol, I didn't see you're in the US
The smartphone, good idea, I have the TV module (analogue, very useful analogue TV doesn't exist anymore here !). If I don't find the issue, I'm going to contact Baris to see how much I can cost to repair the mk2. In fact, the e39 is not really "my" car, but from a family member, but I really want to make it perfect ("x40i", not a common type here !). I had an e46 320, I currently have an 2006 e90 330d, the e39 540i building & feeling quality is just superb, impressive for a 13 years car ! Only 35000 miles, almost new Thanks ! |
