Anyone Interested in Grey Instrument Panel Gauges mod for $40? Group Buy?

Hi All,
Inspired by FeelGoodUn's retrofit of a 04+ grey-gauge instrument panel (with mixed results) this week:
Apparently there are shops online that can fabricate gray-dial, night-illuminated gauge dials for the instrument panel... A quick search of the web led to FleaBay mostly, though a few custom gauge shops sell through other channels. The finished product could be like the later model 4.4+'s, with grey dials with white lines, and illuminating oem orange with other color accents at night. Here's a pic (day & night views) for e36 models priced at $38, essentially plug & play I believe:

Anyone interested? There's nothing current for our X's (or the e39s with the same panel essentially), but apparently any layout can be done- the shop just needs to know the specs for various panel options (mileage & rpm min/max's and various indicator layouts. Maybe this could be the start of a group-buy effort to have them made (since it'd cross over to the e39s, any company making em should see a solid profit).

That looks hot!!! The tricky part should be removing the needles and putting them back...

I have worked with clusters, taken a few apart and I can tell you it is extremely difficult to install these. extremely difficult. But I'm down if someone knows how to install these. btw I know how to cure the pixel problem, the E38 directions on how to fix the pixels are crap.

Tell us how to fix the pixel problem

carlos3679 03-22-2006 12:39 PM

I would be down,

Thanks all! I'd like to talk to folks who've completed this install too! It may be a tough DIY, so I'm editing out the "plug-n-play?" in my initial message since that doesn't appear to be the case. From one vendor:
"PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."

However, at that price, the install is going to be the only major cost. I think it'd be worth a bit of effort cause the finished product is sweeet. ;)
Feel free to share your interests or experiences with this kin of mod!

asawadude 03-22-2006 09:21 PM

I must be getting old. At one time, "PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" meant "BY ALL MEANS, TRY THIS AT HOME" and "YOU SUCK AS A MECHANIC IF YOU CAN"T DO THIS."

I've got a couple of clusters I need to fix lying around my house, after I've fixed these and sold them on ebay, I will do a write up on how to fix the pixel problem.

I would love it if some were made for the X3, as long as they were not overlays. I would buy for sure.

WMG/BMW 03-29-2006 03:30 PM

The holes on the pcs are bigger then the original, but you won't see it on the cluster, the original ones need to be (CUT) off, they will not be able to go over the needles. I've done this on a rice burner and it was Sweet....I found a few companies willing to make this for the X5 they said they needed a scan of a original guage and i cut one off of a 3.0i however I have a 4.4i and the redline is diff so I did not do it.

Mindfull 03-31-2006 02:54 PM

Alright, so here's an update and a couple options for anyone interested:
1) Thanks to WMG/BMW (Caribbean cousin?), a manufacturer is being sent a guage scan for the X5. It'll likely take some time to get to them and for them to break it down into finite specs, but perhaps when that point is reached, we can send em a few messages relaying our interest in seeing the product through. Seeing the few companies that make these, it's pretty much a cookie-cutter kit depending on size/ layout of each dial that's applicable, so perhaps they even already produce certain guages, and will only have to change minor details (coloring/ contrast/ redlines) to suit the e53. This path will take some patience, but looks promising.

2) If there's anyone raring to go & has a couple $hundred itching to get out of their pocket, there's a complete custom fab shop (in Ireland?!) which claims to offer a completely customizable display with any colors/dials/backlights of your choosing. I haven't worked with this company, so can't give any endorsement (and personally their feedback doesn't reflect any of these units, so I'm holding my cards), but FWIW, here's the link- Looks like costs run $250-600 depending on whether they use a unit supplied by the car-owner, or send you an entire replacement console without receiving yours:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT (Note: Don't bid, it's just an order process description, which might be why their feedback doesn't show these)

Sorry for the lengthy details, but thought folks might want to know the options thus far. Maybe some more potential manufacturers will come out of the woodwork...
Best,
///M

too much trouble and $$ for this mod. A better and easier alternative would be to buy a 4.6is cluster or an M5 one. (just my .02)

HamannE53 04-30-2006 03:10 AM

i just want to retrofit the 4.6 cluster on my 4.4 so i can have the light up guages =D how can ido this without losing my mpg reader?

I totally agree. Thought it'd be easier, but seems like way to much hassle. Also, the manufacturers who said they could.... couldn't.

You could just use OBC, if you want to monitor mileage, I suppose.

serbstyle1 05-01-2006 02:56 PM

Im in for the overlays, if it doesnt take two years for them to come out. Whats the ETA?

I was thinking about doing the retrofit from the 4.6 but dont know how to do it or even if it is possible. Anyone know?

serbstyle1 05-22-2006 05:04 PM

Is somebody working on this? Whats going on?

WMG/BMW 05-23-2006 12:12 AM

seems all the companies that said they would are now saying they won't.

nextel773 07-28-2006 02:54 PM

looks good. how much for a white gauge face for x5. i want them to have the same night oem light glow.

asawadude 07-29-2006 05:20 AM

We need a Polish translator... no English on the website and everything is in Flash, so cutting and pasting into babelfish isn't possible.

nextel773 07-29-2006 07:37 AM

hello, found this link.. BMW dials for your speedometer they say the have the e36, white gauge face... they look the same as x5. but im not sure.. can some one confirm that the e36 and e53 have the same layout.....

Danzig 997 07-29-2006 12:08 PM

I can get almost any BMW dial replacement for about $100, all dials shown above are made in Germany. Made the same way as BWM OEM dials from matte anti-reflective plastic. Most of them use night oem light glow. The problem is that they come only in Km and Liters. Only dials from E38 and E39 will fit X5

No, e36 and e53 are not the same layout (physical dimensions not even close) :tsk:

totally agreed!

NINCHS 06-05-2007 01:41 AM

looks good, if you can translate km to miles while you are driving here in the states.

Obeticus4.6is 06-05-2007 01:19 PM

Seems like a lot of time and hassle why not just buy a 4.6is ? :) this way you get your gauges the high output motor and the factory bodykit with the flared fenders that everybody wants oh and don't forget the 10.5" wide wheels !! :) thats what I did !! just joshin folks....
