What happened to Christ in Christmas?
 

Time, of course, has a way of changing everything. What once was, is no more. It looks to me like the “Christ” has been ripped out of Christmas. Now all we hear is “Happy Holidays” with “good old Saint Nick.” Christmas time is the time to “eat, drink and be merry.” Credit cards are maxed out to the limit, people leaving parking lots require anger management counselors, bargain hunters need to wear hard hats or football helmets to survive. So..... For those of you that celebrate it, please tell me "What happened to Christ in Christmas?" :dunno:

The Christ in Christmas is alive and well in the South. Lots of decorations, and yes, we all still say "Merry Christmas" here. Heck, I saw a huge light mosaic of Jesus and Mary (billboard-like) on the hills of Danville VA yesterday.

Then again, I guess the south is more religious than most other places of the US anyway........not that it's a bad thing.

Christmas is what you make of it. It is a great time to see other people and buy gifts.
A outdoor display with Jesus and Marry does not belong on government property.

I think is a great time to donate money to the charities and do good works such as a soap kitchen. That said you don't need to be Christen to do this. Yes you can be a good person with or without religion!

Yes Christmas is commercialize but I don't see any problem with saying happy holidays. If you want more Christ go to church, but the fact that Christmas has become a holiday for everyone is not a problem.

I do think the desire to buy gifts can be excessive and produces excess consumption and pollution.

So where is this festival celebrating Christ's birth?

It's around.. :thumbup: BUT not everyone celebrates Christmas, Not everyone is Christian and not even believes the same thing thus I give out Happy Holidays cards because I'm inclusive of all religions, beliefs and mindsets. I call it tolerance and acceptance...

Isn't it supposed to be in YOUR heart?

Or are you one of those that feels the need to define other's beliefs by your own criteria?

I just asked the question based on the "Commentary by Roger Oakland" in the first
post of the thread. It would seem to me that the response that people give would define
the criteria and the answer to the question.

I am with you, Barry. In fact, I even had this conversation with a Jewish friend last week. He is a big fan of saying "Merry Christmas" to his Christian friends, and doesn't remotely find it offensive if someone says it to him, not knowing he is Jewish. He thinks (in his own spirit of tolerance) that it is a joyous time for Christians, and should be celebrated as a happy time by all.
