Nav OS upgrade covered under maintenance/warranty?

Just wanted to clarify if Navigation OS upgrades should be covered under either the original vehicle warranty or extended maintenance packages. If so, I'm going to have the dealer upgrade me from 4-1/40 instead of worrying about miffing it up myself.

If not, how much does it usually cost to have the dealer do it?

I feel so outdated after looking at what you all have done with your Xs!:loser2:

Yes.

I'm at BMW of Riverside right now, and my service advisor is suggesting that his service manager and warranty advisor are saying that upgrades/updates aren't included under warranty unless there's a problem with the vehicle that they will fix.

Any suggestions on how I should approach this?

Tell them that sometimes the Nav Computer disapears or the map screen freezes, then when you turn the ignition off and then on again you get a different type of display with blocky text and no Nav option (look for screen shots of the old Nav system, V18 or earlier). The style is like this :

Then they will either update the OS or swap out the nav computer, either way you should get the latest OS! :)

Thats going to be a bit of a stretch Richard, as these symptons only manifest themselves when you have the TV tuner module. Folks in the USA dont get that.

And .. I'm afraid the dealer is correct. BMW NA now state in the release notes for the NAV OS update that the upgrade is no longer covered under the vehicle warranty. Thanks BMW NA !

In your case, I would just say, periodically the NAV system reboots or freezes. That normally gets them to load the latest OS SW. Its alot cheaper for them to update the OS SW than it is to replace the entire NAV computer !

I had my OS upgraded under warranty recently. It takes them almost 5 minutes to complete. It's very fast and there should be no charge.

This appeared as a new item in the V27 release notes/service bulletin:

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Updating the vehicle at customer request is not covered under warranty.

:o ooops, I keep forgetting you lot don't get the TV as standard over there! Just go with the 'It keeps locking up' ploy.

Thanks for the replies!

I just did it myself - thanks to the wonderful instructions here, it took all of 3 minutes once I had made the software CD. Kinda irks me that my dealer/BMWNA wouldn't mind spending those 5 minutes taking care of their customers.
