Nav retrofit installed, few issues, pretty long, sorry

I completed the nav retrofit into 03 X5 with a few problems.
First one is that I will have to get a replacement radio from Vaheh, because the one that he sent me is not working, it has a problem with the tunner, can't get any radio stations to tune in. I took the car apart a few times trying to figure it out, I though was the antenna connection behinde the C pillar, and in the end I plugged in my old radio back and it worked, so is not the cable and is the radio. I will have to call him tomorrow to get a replacement radio.
Second problem is that I get a blank screen, ( back light screen lights up) and I can control the radio but not the nav drive. The drive in the back is blinking red and then solid red... tried to insert a map cd or even a firmware cd and it's tring to read it for about 30 seconds and then it rejects the CD/DVD. Any thoughts? Everything is wired in properly ( I doubled, triple checked) one wire going in the back of the high intrument cluster and the second wire is going to the light module. ground is properly connected.
I'm wondering if is a bad drive MK4 or 16:9 screen? How can isolate the problem? Can I use something else for video input to get it to display something on the 16:9 screen?
A easy way will be if I can try a different MK4 drive from someone, anybody in San Jose bay area that is willing to help?
Another concern that I had was that my car is not programmed or coded for the navi-retrofit by the dealer. I think I should be able to see something on the screen even if is not programmed yet, correct? thinking of the IBUS, KLINE protocol....

Any thoughs, ideas, what else can I try to isolate the problem will be very appreciated. :wow:

On the radio module issue, did you check to see if it is in USA mode? See http://www.xoutpost.com/showarticle-236.html. Note, though, that if you aren't getting a picture on the nav screen then this is going to be tough to do.

As for the screen itself, did you first do a check of all of the wiring and components prior to running in the new harness? It sounds like a possible connection problem between the MkIV and the nav screen.

I did check everything on the bench, outside of the car, and it was the same problem, blank screen. So you think it might be the mk4 or the screen?
I don't need to have the car reprogrammed for the navi retrofit in order for the screen to work? correct? With the radio, that might be the problem, but I can find out until I get my screen to work.

It's hard to say whether it's the screen or the nav drive. As you suggested, try finding someone around you that is willing to swap components to help isolate the problem

:goodluck:

UcrewX5,
I'm trying to set my radio up to the us region, and I will try to follow the directions, but since the nav screen is blank, can you tell me how many >> pushes I need to get to the US region on the radio, I'm trying to see if I can change it without the screen. Until I find another dvd drive at least I can listen to some radio.
Thanks,

My guess is that the screen unit is defective. I had the same problem during one of the retrofits I did. The screen was blank although it powered up okay. Turned out to be a defective LCD screen. Luckily I was able to get it replaced. Where did you get it? There are a lot of defective parts floating around on ebay...

The MKIII units are very easy to damage. Simply plug or unplug the unit and even that can kill it. The MKIV's however are more reliable. I have yet to come accross a defective one...

I bought the screen of ebay, isolating the problem

The seller said that he tested and it worked ok.
The screen is blank, but you can see the backlight coming on.
I'm going to try tomorrow another mk4 drive form a BMW M3 to try rto isolate the problem. What should I try? Should I plug my mk4 drive in his car and see if it works or take his good one and try it mine? Do I need to disconnect the neg battery before I unplug the good one out of his M3?

Thanks and let me know.

As King mentions, the MkIII is much more prone to damage by improperly disconnecting the power source then the MkIV. I've disconnected my MkIV dozens of times without disconnecting the battery with no ill effects. Just let it go into "quite" mode (no i-bus traffic for about 15 minutes) before disconnecting it.

I would try to both test your MkIV in his M3 and also test his MkIV in your X5

tried it with an mk3 drive and it worked

Does it mean that the MK4 drive is bad?
By looking at the drive, when I download the firmware from v23 to v26 to v23 and so on, the drive is doing what is suppose to do, blinking and after a few minutes is rejecting the CD... but no picture on the screen?
By recoding the car will make the MK4 drive come back to life?
Should I waste $70.00 at the stealer to get my x5 recode it?

It sounds like the MkIV drive is bad, and I do not believe that having the vehicle recoded will have any impact.

What is the part number on the MkIV?
