Digital phone service

Does anyone here use or know anything about digital phone service provided by Time Warner Cable? It seems like a great deal at $40 a month for unlimited domestic and to Canada long distance with no time restrictions. International (other than Canada) calls are billed at a "competitive rate" and I rarely if ever call anywhere other than US and Canada. They also offer number portability so I should be able to keep my current phone number even though I'm moving far enough where the phone company would issue me a new number. All of the usual gotta-pay-for-it features like call waiting, caller ID, and call forwarding are included.

Any opinions?

It their flavor of VOIP. It's my personal opinion that VOIP is the future, but not quite ready for prime-time. There are still issues such as E-911, powering, network stability and QoS (quality of service) that are still being resolved.

Price wise, you might want to see what your local phone company is offering in response to those kind of plans. In SBC's area you can now get the All Distance package (unlimited local and long distance in the U.S.), caller id and several custom calling features for the on-line price of $39.99 a month. If I didn't have kids and a wife at home I might be willing to go this route (actually if I didn't have kids and a wife at home I would probably just cut the cord). However, knowing that this is a lifeline and what I view as an integral part of my family's security, I'm not looking to go this route just yet. As technology improves and matures, I may consider this down the road though.

I used to work for Time Warner Cable, and I can tell you that the corporate offices use VoIP. It works really well; however, they have redundant backups upon redundant backups. If a network goes down, everything fails over to another one.

The ONLY reason I do not have it at home is because when power goes out, there goes your phone service. Ditto if the RoadRunner service goes down for whatever reason. That being said, VoIP DOES work well. As UCrew says, it IS the future. I'm considering it... Great price, great features (you can take your number ANYWHERE in the country -- even a hotel room when you travel), and as long as the power is on, great reliability. The phone service there at TWC is pretty awesome.

I have been using Call Vantage Voip at home for 8 months. $29 unlimited nationwide, and the money does not go to the greedy cable co. I have my cable modem and the Linksys router on a APC battery backup if the power ever goes out. It gives me roughly 30 minutes. But I don't really care, I have a cell phone and rarely use my home phone. It is has never had a problem yet, rock solid over TW RR service. Quality is superb. The features are what makes it a great deal. I save $15/mth over the analog phone service we had and picked up a ton of web-manageable features.

It works with my security system, structured wiring system, and 911 calls get routed to my local county 911 dispatch. Definitely worth taking a look hard look at. There are some great deals out there right now.
