Go to Tools>Options>Send/Receive and click the options that are presented.

Thanks for the reply.
Under Send/receive: there is an option : "Perform an automatic send/receive when exiting". Which i think is the opposite of what i want:
I want to receive my new messages when i open outlook and not when i exit.

I dont know if anybody find that option very useful.

Outlook 2003 automatically does a send/receive when you start the app. What is making you believe that it doesn't?

You can also enable the setting "shedule an automatic send receive every:" and set it to 1 minute.

Outlook 2003 does a send/receive when I start it.... i don't know why yours doesn't, it's not a setting that can be changed afaik.

By default, it does a send/receive when you start Outlook 2003. It sounds like yours is turned off?

Go to Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings > Define Send/Receive Groups.

You will see a number of checkboxes on that dialog window. (You can also click on Edit... and find more settings.) The "Include this group in send/receive (F9)" box should be checked.

Thanks for all your suggestions ( tried and no luck ).... mine definitely does not automatically send/receive when i open it.
I tried sending an email from my http email to my pop and imap accounts ( outlook accts) Then waited couple of minutes before opening Outlook and no auto receive ( clicked tools->send/receive -->send/receive settings--->show progress) and no progress (blank) at all.

do you have "send immediately when connected" enabled? is the email sitting in your outbox in outlook? is the setting that i mentioned in my previous email set up? 'schedule a send/receive every" xx minutes?

tried these settings checked and unchecked and nothing worked....
....found some several articles on some forums and this type of problem has been happening with other users. although there are several causes/fixes , one suggestion worked for me (for now): removing all accounts and installing them back again from scratch. Thanks to all! now i can go to sleep

I have got the same problem. It might be linked to the fact that I installed Outlook 2003 and restored a .pst file from my old PC in the same folder. Probably this was not the way to go and therefore I am getting this problem... Who knows...
