Soaring price of food 'leads to riots'
The World Bank said this week that the price of staple foods has risen by 80 per cent in the past three years. For consumers in wealthy nations such as Britain soaring prices are squeezing household finances and keeping inflation up. But for developing nations they can lead to malnutrition and social disruption. Food prices are being driven up by shortages of supply - often caused by bad weather - and by rising demand. Many at the meeting blamed the price hikes on US and European Union moves to use biofuels such as ethanol to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol, an alternative to petrol, is made using corn and its increasing use has pushed up maize prices.

Now just wait for the US to stop shipping out nearly all its grain and start using the products internally. That should have a crappy impact.
That is the problem with these "think Green" people. They never think for more then a weekend. "Hey lets all run on corn that will be environmentally friendly" oh...woops...now we have no food. So which is better, environmentally friendly..or dead? Hopefully the US will wake up and start using Coal primarily again and start relying more on rail systems (we are starting to as I see a train in my area that use to run 2 times a day, now runs...8 times!!) Same impact will come down the line in some form from these f-n hybrids...I guarantee <--using my most New Orleans style voice

Side note, what two nations are always blamed for using the most oil as a fuel...US and China. Guess what two nations have the highest Coal amounts in the world, the US and China. Switch to Coal for a majority of this crap that doesn't require an internal combustion motor or petroleum. Guess what nations don't have large quantities of Coal, the Middle East...time to turn the tables

It is estimated that 2/3 of the oil reserves of the USA are "off limits" due to environmental concerns... Well i'm pretty sure coal is in a similar situation...Just this week in West Virginia three coal companies agreed to limit operations at a number of mines...Environmentalists had sought a court order shutting down the mines...
