Paging Vinuneruro/other Honda Heads...

Our '03 Honda CR-V, aka TheFridge, has produced the Check Engine
Light for the past couple months. At first, undoing and retightening
the gas cap made the light go out...when that didn't work any longer,
a new cap worked, for awhile. It has come back 24/7, when the
car is on. The CR-V is 5 1/4 years old, had it since new; has less than
60K miles. Engine is the 2.4 L 4 cylinder i-VTEC, with ~160 hp.

I took it to our local hillbilly Autozone and they ran the code checker:

3 Codes:
-P0134 Definition: HO2S 11,(or 1...1?) circuit condition (Heated Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1)

-P1166 Definition: Primary HO2S (No.1) Heater System Electrical

-P1298 Definition: electrical Load Detector Circuit High Input

The guy at AZ had zero clue what to buy, how to fix it...
The car runs fine, (for a pos Honda CR-V), but the annual NC inspection
is coming up and these codes will make it fail.

I GOOG'd the codes and never got a really good info hit; it usually lead
me to Honda forums by the dozens, with thousands of threads, much
like this X5 Board, but in my speed reading perusal, I never found a
real match or, a diagnosis, or a how to fix.

Here in HillbillyHeaven, the car "repair" joints are low tech and limited in
scope; I dread rolling into one and having them "fix it". The closest Honda
car dealer is south of Asheville, doable, but it's a Honda Stlr-ship, if you
get my drift.

Any tips, opinions, comments are appreciated...or, I may have to bite the
bullet and hit the Honda joint.

mD, the obd2 codes are pretty arbitrary. Let me dl the CR-V service manual and get back to you what these codes really mean for this vehicle.

Hit the Honda Joint and be done with it.

You should know how much it's going
to cost to let low tech and limited in
scope people do their thing.

QwkAg, Apple Honda in Asheville has a rep for really laying on the
higher margin bs...I'm no dummy, but they are, imo, really out
to nab you and I am no fan. Plus, it's almost an hour each way,
and a two car run, or I sit half the day+.

If Vig can nail it for me, a local joint, while not my fave, may be
able to do it, at about half the price and even less, the grief...
we shall see.

I thought Hondas lasted "forever", lol! My Scoots are ancient and
run like freakin tops.

I'd wait until Vig gets precise info back to you, but personally I would be be checking for a short, possibly one that caused a fuse to go in the O2 sensor heater circuit. The faults appear to be in the power circuits, not the output circuit of the O2 sensor. While it could be a bad primary O2 sensor, that is a more expensive place to start just replacing parts. I would be looking at the wiring harness to the O2 sensor for chafing, after checking all fuses.

Sorry to hear about the check engine light issue I am no help; do you have any photos of the Scoots?

No experience with Honda car but I agree with JCL on a possible bad connection somewhere. I had a very similar issue with a Mercury sable few years ago. I had the engine light and o2 sensor code. I made the code and engine light disappear for a while by changing the gas cap and disconnect the battery for 5mns. It reappeared again a month or so later. Before replacing the o2 sensor I tried cleaning the contacts on the O2 sensor. I disconnected the O2 sensor, cleaned the contacts and the problem never occurred again for the following 2 years until I sold the car.

I have had two issus on my daughter's 2001 Civic coupe, (DRL light, and Airbag light). Both have been caused by bad connections. The DRL light required a repair to the circuit board due to bad solder from Honda's supplier (don't believe the No Servicable Parts Inside sticker). The airbag light was a contact, but it has come back again. It is the sensor under the passenger seat, so it is only going to impact the non-existent passenger. I found that you can reset it with a paper clip and a series of dots and dashes across two pins in the harness. The things you can find on the internet...

Very reliable cars, but with some corners cut on items that were added for the colonies when the cars were built. NA-specific pollution controls fall in that category along with DRLs and airbag cutouts.

You may just need a primary 02 sensor, but the above experience would have me looking for a harness or connection issue first, and checking fuses.
