Micro cars fair poorly against mid size sedans?

Who’d have though it, huh? Well, at least now there is scientific record, the IIHS offset crashed micro cars with mid size sedans, any bets on the outcome? I'm getting kind of tired of hearing people talk about how safe the micro cars are, just because they did okay in the IIHS offset crash test. In the real world no one runs into a deformable barrier, and if you are driving a micro car, the vehicle you tangle with is likely to be larger than you.

You can't beat physics. Energy always needs a place to go. What a shocker these test results are!!

I hyperventilate when I see a smart car on the highway being passed by a tractor trailer and getting bounced around in his wake. I can't imagine driving in one of those things.

No it isn't. The Honda Fit is on the list of cars in that report

IIHS-HLDI: Honda Fit

Seems ok to me, much better than a smart car.

This part takes the cake (taken from the article)----------

Mercedes C class versus Smart Fortwo: After striking the front of the C class, the Smart went airborne and turned around 450 degrees.
------------

Dayum, now imagine an X5 or similar striking that little thingy. The Smart car will probably launch in orbit

Yes, the SMART did well in the same test as well, that's the point. These cars that rate fine in the 'normal' offset tests really aren't showing the whole picture. These tests only replicate what happens if you strike a deformable barrier (how many of them do you see involved in real world accidents), or somewhat closely to how a vehicle might due if crashed with the same weight/size vehicle.

Technology is great, but you can't roll back the laws of physics, and when these cars impact larger, heavier vehicles, the destruction is quite horrific, despite what the offset crash test results might suggest..

smart cars are stupid. I have never understood their role in the US. Economically, they hardly make sense.

Think about it this way - a smart car gets about 34 miles per gallon mixed driving (I've actually heard its FAR less because of the high load on the engine keeping up with traffic) and costs about $18,000 or so. About a year ago, they were selling around here for roughly $25k FYI.

The basic Toyota Camry invoices MSRP is ~$18,500 with an invoice in the mid $17k range and gets about 27 miles per gallon (many report higher as well). It's bigger, nicer, safer, holds more people, holds more stuff, better looking, more reliable, better warranty, has better resale value, more practical, etc etc. If you can pick up a Camry for roughly the same, if not even less $ than a smart, what advantage does the smart have besides the possibility to occassionally get a couple more miles per gallon (under the right conditions of course!)?

I have friends that want to buy their kids cars like the Chevy Aveo or the tiniest Kias and other cars similar to it in size and price. I always discourage them because at 16-21 yrs old, they're the most likely group to be in an accident. My little sister is turning 16 in two months and my mom wants to get her a car in the $5-$8k range. Guess what my suggestion is? A Land Cruiser!! (1993-1995 era) Screw global warming, screw crappy gas mileage - if my sister is any accident, I want to know she has the best possible chance to walk away from it.
