You actually bought the "threatning to leave the Lakers when the team wasn't doing too well game"? What was the result of that posture?
The team you have today.

As far as Phil's comments? IMHO, Zen master he is. You just got to look
beyond the surface.

Kobe's attitude on and off of the court over the years ( however you want to characterize it)
is what makes him play at the level he does. Who he is as a person is what drives the man. Knowing what that is can give a complete picture.

I don't know him but I understand a driven person who will not accept
anything more than perfection. For those who don't I understand it
I can appreciate that position as well..

I specifically disliked him threatning to leave the Lakers when the team wasn't doing too well, and was willing to throw the team, former players, and the organization under the bus to get what he wanted. Contrast how Kobe handled that situation and how Lebron is handling his current situation in Cleveland.

I hear Kobe-hate/dislike thrown around often, without any explanation. A friend recently admitted that he's hatin' on Kobe simply because he doesn't want to see him surpass Jordan's six rings just yet. Especially since Kobe had a head start.

As a fanboy of the game, i can understand why Kobe was disliked many moons ago, with his me-ism and selfishness. I can also understand the hate stemming from Kobe simply being so good at his role...I guess what i don't understand, is when people cast Kobe hate without a valid explanation. I've witnessed a 13 year veteran seasoned and matured to become a consistent premiere athlete and true leader...his on-court work ethic is undeniably the best in the game.

So to all the Kobe haters...i think it makes for a healthy debate, when you can elongate the specific reasons you dislike Kobe, especially at this point in time.
it would be the overly cocky attitude, especially back when he played with shaq. he has matured though, i'll give ya that.

Understood...that can rub a lot of people the wrong way. I'll admit to being a one time Kobe hater, although short-lived, it was due to the same thing Jordan did during his first 7 years...hoggin' the ball.

Regarding his cocky attitude, i believe that an athletes "cockiness" is often misinterpreted. I'll explain...every athlete who has played any sort of organized basketball can tell you that their coach stressed mental toughness often. What most people see during a game is the physical but there's a mental game going on as well...if one is skilled physically but weak mentally, you'll probably see them on the bench or playing limited minutes...what you won't see, is them on the court during crunch time.

Mental toughness is taught by coaching staff starting in the pee wee leagues...it's the foundation of consistency, it's a part of what allows teams to make comebacks and an integral part of redeeming your past losses by winning. It's also known as swag...call it what you will but understand that it's very necessary when you're on the court. Imagine trying out for a team at a combine or better yet playing in an opponents home court, with momentum against you, fans loudly booing you...outside of skill and the direction of coaching, an athlete has to be able to tune out the chatter and mental game and focus. Swag, attitude, mental toughness, goes a very long ways during such testy situations (aka crunch time).

So while some see "attitude" in Kobe...i see mental toughness and focus. The difference with Kobe, back then, was that he didn't seem to know when to turn it off. However, i see a different Kobe today. Someday when we look back at this era, we'll recall watching Kobe make history.

Kobe's cockiness is rather mild compared to Lebron's... what an egomaniac .... such a need to steal attention by appearing on Larry King.. his idiotic "Witness" shirts... yea we sure witnessed

I think we're talking over all officiating is questionable
at best. Blown calls abound on both sides. Calls they should
have made they didn't calls that were no fouls they called.

And it continues...on both ends. An epic series that could go to 7 and refs consistently make bonehead calls (even with the replay option)
