Listening To Noble Lies - 10-23-09

Freedom of the Press
Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon and others hated the press – hated that the press had the nerve to question their policies or to print and promote alternative or minority points of view.

Now it strikes me that the current administrating saying Fox News isn’t a real news station and telling other networks not to be led by them is a mix of hubris and paranoia.

Off with the heads of those that oppose our great emperor. Those that oppose must be wrong, how dare they have an opinion. While these are not the words of the current administration, it sure feels like that is what they are saying, minimally it reminds me of what Nixon and Agnew said about the press.

When the Obama administration backed down from it’s position of making Treasury Departments Ken Feinberg only available to non Fox news it was clear better decisions were being made.

“President James Madison and other Founding Fathers believed in contests between factions or interested. They would help guarantee liberty by checking and balancing and restraining each other – and an otherwise imperious government. Factions should compete, but they should also recognize the legitimacy of other factions and indeed, their necessity for a vigorous self regulating democracy.” Charles Krauthammer, Fox Wars 10-23-09.

Raising Our Debt Level –
I didn’t know but am a bit alarmed that the Congress is about to vote on whether to raise our debt limit and they don’t have to limit future spending. Seems obvious now but think about it. How much borrowing is too much, how many people need to say this is reckless before disaster happens? Individuals and businesses in the US can’t dramatically raise their debt levels without strings attached but our Federal Government can. The current law says we are at our limit of $12 trillion. The secretary of the Treasury has written Congress asking them to increase our credit level ASAP.

Under the Obama budget, debt will double by 2013 and triple by 2019 when it will represent more than 80% of our economy. For the past 30 years it’s been about 40% of GDP.

I think there needs to be significant and honest government debate on the subject of unsustainable national debt.

Nobel Lie
In politics a noble lie is a myth or untruth knowingly told by an elite to maintain social harmony, particularly the social position of that elite group in office.

We deserve what we vote for I guess. The dollar will be worth 1/10th of a Euro before Obama is done...
