You mean a Cayenne?
I don't need an off-road vehicle as such (I have my old Range Rover for that), just something that I can drive on the local gravel roads and farm tracks etc without the fear of destroying tyres and not having a full-size spare to fall back on. My '05 E53 3.0d with its 235/65R17 Pirelli Scorpion ATRs with a matching, full-size spare is ideal. |

Finally had a good drive of the new X3 and I reckon it's a ripper. Possibly the best X yet. In many ways it feels like an E53. It's certainly a similar size. Driven both the 20d (2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel) and the 28i (3.0-litre petrol six). The turbo diesel is way ahead of the atmo petrol engine, as sweet as the petrol six is. Three-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel to come, at least for Australia. But no 35i, the turbo petrol 3L, for Oz.

May have to go down and check one out out of curiosity! (not for me)
I heard they were quite a bit bigger than the previous one. |

Yes, more like the size of an E53.
If your E53 is getting tired, and you don't want the extra size of the E70, this is the replacement provided the run-flat tyres aren't a problem for you. The eight-speed ZF auto is good value at this price point in the market. The extra low first gear is good for traffic-light GPs ... if that's your thing. |

We received a bunch of promotional material in the mail from BMW this morning for the X3... looks nice.
My old lady is considering trading the E90 320d for one. Eight speed sounds promising. May go down and see what the fuss is about. |

The 28i (three-litre petrol six) looks like a stop-gap engine to me and probably won't be around all that long with the turbo four-cylinder petrol engines in the pipeline. Last edited by Fraser; 03-24-2011 at 02:50 AM. |

Not downsize but upsize would be the decision for me. No thanks. I chose the X3 due to size. X5 was too big +heavy and with the then current generation 3.0D was far slower. The new X3 is bigger - 20d does look good and the 30d even better but I will stick to the 3.0D I have (AT issues beside) especially with the ECU remap - sheesh - scary now. With the new Nokian snow tyres amazing now in the wet and white stuff. So committed for a while.
