Haven't logged on for 18 months, but if you still have this problem, yes the repair will fix it - I had the same problem.

Hi Everyone, new to the forum here (X5 3.0d, 2006). I have not had the car long (upgrade from E36 320i) - and have been pondering why the sound coming from the stereo in the X5 was so rubbish. None of the speakers on the left hand side, or rear of the car work. Just horrible sound, like you would expect from a 1978 Datsun 1800 AM radio...

So got to researching (this site and the X5 FB page) and it sounds like this is a common problem in these cars - knackered BM53 and BM54 units. More research led me to believe the world guru at fixing these things is a bloke called Baris, in the UK.

I am not inclined to send my unit to the UK, when I am certain someone local in AUS can effect a similar repair. I see from this thread there is a guy in East Brighton (VIC) - and also some comments about a Sydney based guy also. My question to you all - have any of you had this repair carried out locally, and how did it go? If success and you are happy - that's great - maybe you can point me in the right direction of someone who can assist.

Hi Salty dog, that's useful to know, but what guy in Sydney? How much? where is he located etc? I have spoken to the bloke in Melbourne and it sounds like he fixes these things in his sleep. Confident he will look after me. I will dig my unit out of the boot of the car this weekend. It will be good to get the sound in the car back to what is should be. Those Taylor Swift CD's will have never sounded better!

Thats the man

BTW, when you lose the front Speakers, you lose you GPS Navigation voice also

As for getting your sound back to what it should, don't hold your breath, the E53 X5 has about the worst Audio i have ever come across.

There is no GPS in the car, and I have no interest in installing it really. Not good news on the 'standard audio'. I am not a massive 'aficionado' of in car sound, but if it is really that rubbish, maybe some speaker upgrades could be in order. Thanks everyone for your info, much appreciated.

Well, you also lose your Hand Free, so that may perhaps interest you.

Anyway, get a replacement unit and it will all be ok.
BTW, yesterday i found the quote BMW gave me for the BM54 unit, $1136 AUD.
