Tint-A-Car Tints, and Comfort Access
I've got a 2010 X5 E70 and want to get windows tinted. I've heard a number of good customer X5 stories about Tint-A-Car. My question: Has anyone with Comfort Access on an E70 got their windows tinted at tint-a-car? Which film did you go for? My X5 has got comfort access, which is really important to us, as we're scuba divers and I don't have to get my key out from under my drysuit to open the car.. Cheers + thanks, Oztme.

Short version: Comfort Access is wireless/RF; some metal tints stop RF.
Long version: I believe thatsSome of the tints around are metalised, and I've heard (dunno if true) that they form a faraday cage (stop radio). So this means the comfort access fob sensors can't get the wireless signals to the sensors maybe? This might mean that when the mrs approaches the car with her fob, the seat doesn't move into the correct spot. Not a big deal; but you get very used to it and spoiled. I also need the car to sense the fob when I walk up behind the car in my diving gear, so I can push a button and have the tailgate open, without having to use a normal key. I'm worried that a metalised tint will shield RF from where it needs to get to.. Also, In the E70 LCI, I'm not sure if the comfort access sensors are external to the cabin (ie: in doorhandles) or inside door trim etc... Cheers Scott.

Im pretty sure they will recommend a non-metallic tint because of the potential to interfere with GPS and internal antennas. Better off talking to the pros than listening to a forum though.
I recommend tint-a-car in north melbourne. The guy (Peter) is very approachable and knowledgeable. I've had one car done there and was very happy. He'll put a light meter through your current window and advise you on your darkest option. This is important as there may already be a small amount of factory tint impregnated in the glass. If you go darkest legal over a factory tint, it can make a 35% tint up to a 30% tint, making it illegal. Vic Police have done blitz's on tint in the past - they did a big one on St Kilda rd a couple of years ago - but your real issue will be if you ever want to sell the car and get a RWC - the RWC tester is required to put a light meter on your windows and record. Too dark and you'll get failed, have to pull the tint off etc....nightmare.

Thanks for your advice mate.
I went to see Peter at Tint-a-car in North Melbourne as you recommended. I was impressed with his honesty; and want to send my car to him. Problem is, I've decided to go with the minimal tint all around, which means I stay vicroads legal. Bad news is that this means I'd needing to use his formula 1 tint, which is metallic: which I'm not happy about given comfort access etc. His darker tints are non-metallic, but too dark for me to stay 100% legal. I need to call him and find out what options I have. They only have 4 types of tint, and the low darkness one was metallic I'm not prepared to risk going metallic. Cheers + thanks again, Scott.

I'd definitely use him again, plus they can do your car on a Saturday; drop it off in the morning, go have a lazy breakfast at Auction Rooms (great coffee) and a bit of a stroll up and down Errol St and by the time you walk back it will be done. Did he say that the metallic tint was likely to interfere? This thread is suggesting 'maybe'......and safer to go with a ceramic based tint Comfort Access and Window Tint... - BMW M5 Forum and M6 Forums

Hiya,
I called Tint Professor and they sounded OK, but their shops were all quite a long way away from me. I went back to Peter at Tint-a-car North Melbourne. Turns out, he had a non-metallic tint that I could use, that is legal all around, and didn't interfere with Comfort Access. I booked my car in for 35% tint all around. Picked it up today. Looks quite good really. I'm happy with the job, but it's still drying etc., so I can't give my final rating yet. For service quality, I would give them 10/10. I was referred to them by a bloke I know with a white 2010 X5 40d who went there, and also was very happy. I will post some pics when I get time; and in a few weeks time, I will post a final quality review: for the moment, I would give them 9.5/10 but I think this will switch to 10/10 once they're dry (coupla days in the sun should do the trick). Woot! Now to find a comfort/tinted front windscreen... Thanks for your help Smokey53 and others! Cheers, Scott.

Great result, I'll be getting in touch with Peter soon also.
I'm sure the window will look much much better after 48hrs. All the cloudiness will disappear as the remaining moisture evaporates. I had an LS400 done once which is notoriously the hardest car to tint (ask any tinter) because of the super thick defroster lines on the rear window and the curvature of the glass. Most tinters will do it in two halves. I had a guy with 25yrs experience do it, and it looked horrible. Bubbles everywhere. He told me to give it a week, and if i wasn't happy he'd do it again - and sure enough - within a week the tint had 'sucked down' and every single bubble was gone.
