You're right. How about a compression test? If rings, will be easy detected. Like you said, when cold, there's not oil puf, but when oil heated, its thin like water and passing by really small places...

If only heads, after rebuilt, I would say to change the oil and filter and drive slow for 10 miles. Get back and change the oil/filter again. It's cheap than...
