BRN/GRN for the washer level is the signal wire which when grounded by the level switch with the BRN/BLK wire keeps the washer level light off. NOT saying that is the wire you are dealing with but...

In the mean time(if you haven't already) have a good look to see if there is anything within reach disconnected. I just had a quick look on mine (3.0L) and the only exposed BRN/GRN wire I could see...

You should be able to figure that out with the wiring diagram. Looks like the previous owner was trying to bypass something. If you don't have the Bentley manual you should get one.
