They did it to reduce driveline shock from people letting the clutch out too quickly. It doesn't change when the clutch moves, just how fast it moves, and thus the elapsed time until engagement.

Six speed is no less reliable than the five speed. It is a better match to the vehicle and is thus desirable.

I replaced the CDV a few times with the Zeckhausen one, because I didn't want the bother of reshaping the clutch line. It isn't hard to do, but I was ordering brake parts, and so it was easy to use...

Have you removed the Clutch Delay Valve (CDV)? I found it made a big difference in several of my manual transmission BMWs (except the 535i). I didn't have a manual X5, so not sure there.
