It's the Telematics Control Unit. Apparently it handles all communications-related features, including BMW Assist and Bluetooth. I have a different stereo set-up in my X3, but the dead TCU also...

TCU replaced and everything is working again! Took the dealer about 3 hours total - the SA said that most of the time was for the programming after it was installed.
