As for whats required to install them. Remove the old bulbs and install the new bulbs. No mods needed.

I personally just run without one. Both my E53's have dead electric fans. Runs fine with no temperature issues. Both of them have the temp gauges coded to read as real gauges and not idiot lights.

The black ring has to be aligned with the abs sensor when installed which was in first best I remember. just make sure the ring is on the side that is closest to the abs sensor after installed.
