I'm guessing the older car has the MKII Navcomputer, which can have one of two styles of harness connector, like the mk1 or the mk3, the gps unit is outside...

The work-around was.

1. Put the car in pairing mode.
2. Transfer individual contacts as vcards via bluetooth.

It gets tiring...

however, it seems pretty reliable on the 13th gen, the phonebook transfers, the connection during calls has been good.
