I've definitely noticed the polarity difference in slip rings wear, and it makes sense physically too - the landing surface of the electrons will see more wear than the take-off...

Good luck. I use the thinnest zip tie that is long enough, e.g., 4" long, about 2mm wide. But in your case, I think that won't be the best way to do it. I'd first try to see if my plan above works,...

From your description, the thing that seemed most odd was the high voltage - 15+ Volts. And that would suggest a failed VR.
