Lowered the x5 M

Little trip to IND today =) 2" drop up front with H&R springs. Took us a little while to dial in the back, but finally got it right for now. Also had my grill trim painted gloss black. Ilia and Nate were kind enough to put up a 20" HRE p40 so I could get an idea of what it would look like. 22" probably the way to go.

Enjoy the crappy iphone pics (forgot the memory card for my camera LOL). Better pics this weekend after a wash.

Looking good. When are you getting p40?

MB PERF 02-04-2010 12:09 PM

Nice........ the lower stance looks cool

How do you find the ride / handling?

Can you PM me the cost for these parts please .

Thanks MB

x5m mofo 02-04-2010 12:32 PM

Let me just say: you are the MAN! That looks fantastic! So low and so mean. I have a fetish in my mind of a low and mean x5m.

The HREs could certainly finish off my fetish... Please feel free to acquire them as soon as you can. Thank you!!!!! How is the ride by the way?

jasonrhcastle 02-04-2010 01:37 PM

How much for the set of 20inch P40s?

poleposition 02-04-2010 02:39 PM

Looks great. Wheels will really set it off even more. What was that you mentioned about spacers in the pic above? yay or nay? I say yay. They make a huge difference.

Trips 02-04-2010 02:53 PM

Thx guys for all the comments. The p40 is a stunning wheel, p40L in 22" will be available this summer, hopefully. Anyways, I really like the lower stance of the car now. Ride is surprisingly good, I almost cannot notice any difference from stock, maybe over a large bump I can, but overall very acceptable.

For some reason we were having a hard time seating the rear wheel on to the hub of the spacer. It just didn't fit! Doesn't make sense, I'm gonna probably take another look this weekend.

Looks great! Is that Carbon Black or Black Sapphire?

jasonrhcastle 02-04-2010 03:47 PM

Looks like Carbon...

Trips, how much for the 20 inch P40l's? I am thinking either 20 or 21 inch P40L's, or 215 Ferric Grey...

Trips 02-04-2010 04:54 PM

Carbon is right! Check your pm Jason.

Looks awesome! 2" WOW! I lowered my 4.8 by 2" at first and then went with a 1.5" drop. The handling was simply amazing with the nose lower to the ground but it would often bottom out on any bumps or dips in the road. Obviously the M has different suspension so it may be difficult to compare. Those wheels will look great. I still think you should go with grey or black though, especially now that you blacked out the grills!

I'm glad to see H&R FINALLY started putting rear links in their kits. They kept telling people the rear would lower itself with the self leveling suspension...

Here's a poor photochop, but you get the idea...

Trips 02-04-2010 10:19 PM

awsome pshop arvi!!!

wow, 20's don't look so bad, maybe 21's would be fine. Ride would be better than 22's for sure.

_Tom

x5m mofo 02-05-2010 02:22 PM

Thanks for the photoshop! If it were me, I'd stick to 21s if you have it lowered like that and 22 with stock height. I dont know the prices but I bet that 21s (and tires to fit) would save you a fair bit of beer money compared to 22s :) Also, with a dark color like that I enjoy a lighter rim contrast.

Feel free to post as many pictures as you please!!!

But its your car.

998M 02-05-2010 03:21 PM

Tom,

It looks great. I really like the lowered look. What all was involved with lowering it? Just springs? I thought the back was air assisted and need something else. Do you mind telling me the cost?

The gloss black grill loks much better than the matte black that I went with. I will have to paint mine.

IND also has some blacked out side LED lights. I just ordered them.

Really like the P40s

Nice speaking to you Trips...car looks great

Per our discussion it looks like the new X5 M has the same set up as the X6 with the smaller size hubs in the rear than the front.

Never understand why BMW did that - I don't see the benefit

Did you try X6 M wheels on X5 M?
In Europe you can order X5 M with X6 M style 300M wheels.

Trips 02-06-2010 01:34 PM

Hub size for x5 m is same as for x6 m, that is why the wheels are interchangeable. The spacers from my e70 will not fit the rear x5 m wheels for this reason. I'm going to order some x6 spacers and will let everyone know for sure.

 That's sweet!! Going to have to decide between one of these, and E90 M3, or the new M1 when it comes out. Posts like this one make the decision more interesting. Great job!!

Thats how is should look. Get some wheels come summer and your good to go.

Thx Gary. I knew you'd be able to shed some light on this. My new spacers should be in this week and I'll let everyone know how it goes.

this jod would not affect the warranty?

lowering the e70 would not affect the factory warranty?

C's Bimmer 02-09-2010 12:28 AM

Definitely get the spacers and congrats on the new wheels. The stock wheels are god awful on the M.

As for lowering, it's funny -- I lowered mine with the same set-up, but the ride was too harsh, so my wife made me raise it back up. I actually take the truck up to the mountains, so having the clearance is good to have, but it sure did look a lot better lowered.

Regardless, congrats!

Mad sweet! Love that grill!

Finally found some time to get my X5M down to the guys at IND. They installed the 2" drop H&R springs. Painted a few odd and ends. Everything looks great. Thanks guys.

Here is the before and after pics. I am also including a picture before all the mods started.

While I really like the look of the lowered X5M. The 2" might be just a little too low for my taste. I think the ride is noticably firmer. The 21" wheels with run-flats probably do not help. The other issue is that I bottomed out the suspension already. Going to run with it for a month or so and see if it grows on me.

I lasted 3 days before returning it back to stock. I was actually ok with it, even though the bottoming out sounded awful. Since I got the X for my wife, she absolutely hated how it felt and I lost that battle immediately -- hahaha! Although it looked great, it wasn't worth it in the end. I just sold my springs to another member on this board.

As for your M, it looks great!

MB PERF 06-12-2010 09:40 AM

You 5 looks good. I just installed the kit as well, it is a stiff ride but I have not bottomed out yet. My wife has not really given me he final verdict. time will tell.

Thanks for the pics.

My wife was in the X5 for the first time after I lowered it. I was not even out of my neighborhood when my wife looked at me and said "You ruined your car again, didn't you?" After a couple of seconds of stammering, I admitted to the new springs.
I really love the look of the lowered X5M. But I am thinking that I am going to have to put the old springs back on. I didn't go with a different exhaust because I put customers in my car. Not sure if the lowered springs are any better than the exhaust.
The handling has changed as well. The car/truck becomes very unsettled when you hit any king of bump mid-corner. I was taking an off ramp by my house at high speed. It is a fairly open ramp so you can keep the speed up. In the middle of the corner there is a bump. Never been a problem in the past. This time the car had a huge wiggle and became significantly unsettled.
Looks like I will go back to the old springs. Bummed that it did not work out.

LOL! This is EXACTLY what happened to me. EXACTLY! Hahahahaha! My car lasted 3 days with the lowered look. It looked amazing and handled smooth corners as good as my M(OK...maybe that's pushing it), but hitting a bump or pothole was brutal. The thud the car makes is just not right.

Welcome back to OEM life! Hahahahaha!:p:
