Thinking of X5M: newbie questions

Hi all. This is my first post on this board. I have been lurking around for sometime now. Have a couple of questions for u guys. As the title shows I am thinking of getting a X5M. The issue is that I have not test driven one. The dealers here tell me that the M series automobiles are hard to come by. I did test drive the V8....it was a great experience. So I can only imagine that the M will be like with all the extra torque and the extra 150Hp....

I have a couple of questions for u enthusiasts:

1. How does it do in winter and snow? It comes with performance tires I know. How much do the winter tires cost?

2. If an used car comes along should I consider it? On one hand is the thought that the previous owner must have used it as its meant to be ( :) ): therefore is it worth the risk to get one used? On the other hand could save about 10 grand...

3. Read about the chipping issue. U guys talk about 3M/clearBra...forgive my ignorance: what are they and can I get it done at the dealer before I pick the car? Going with the posts looks like u guys got the whole front and the sides covered with it right?

4. What packages would u guys absolutely recomend? Thinking of ventilated seats, drivers assistance, premium sound and cold weather package....

Reading through the posts looks like 500-1000$ above invoice seems to be the sweet point. Thanks in advance.

it was good to find this forum.....

Welcome to the forum.

1-car comes with summer performance tires which are completely useless and in fact dangerous in winter conditions. Solution: Winter tires and wheels, OE pack can run you about 3k or go all season if snow and ice is not massive.
2-Used car is a better buy but you are always taking a chance. I have babied my car 100% so far so if I were to sell buyer would get a good deal, others may not care as much and like to drive theirs(like it is meant to be driven).
3-Chipping issue is real. The main areas affected are rear fender flares and side skirts. BMW has come out with a solution(pre cut 3M like cover) that cost around 400$ uninstalled. The front of the car is like any other.
4-The one thing that I absolutely recommend are the comfort seats, rest of it is up to you.
Good luck.

Winter driving

I did test drive the X5M. Loved it.

I did notice that it sits low when compared to the regular X5. Even if I change the tires to winter ones, is driving during snow a problem since the vehicle sits lower? Thanks for the input.

Thanks Rez...

Any of you hear of the "European BMW delivery program"? Any advantages with it other than getting to go to Munich?

Program is not available for X5 of any kind. They are made in South Carolina plant. You can do EU delivery for cars made in Germany. The advantage is visiting the factory, taking delivery of your baby in the beautiful hall and driving it for 2 weeks in europe. The EU prices are slightly cheaper as well and since the cars sold won't come off of dealer quota you can negotiate better.

Thanks Rez. Knew it was not available for the X5 and Z4. Thought that since its an M we are talking about, I should try my luck. lol.

Only X5, X6 and X3 are not for Euro delivery. You can still do Performance Center delivery. They will let you drive a X5M on track, do the slalom, off-roading, etc. and a factory tour.
I just returned from Spartanburg with factory tour and track time:thumbup:. Very good experience.

If you go the used car route, make sure how they have covered-up the chips. I have heard of X5M and X6M returned to dealers with chipped paint and they covered it by repainting and no mention to next buyer.

Thanks...I will look into the BMW experience. I decided to stick with a new car: that way I get what I want and know that I am the orginal owner.

With the 3M layering on the front and sides: could u guys list the ballpark price for it so that I could know if the dealer is charging me through the roof for it..Thanks.
