Cold Air Intake & Our x5m's? Custom Project?

I have always been a fan of modding bmws and been fortunate to own/mod them since i was 16..

The very first mod id usually install on my previous models was a cold air intake kit.. Usually it would be a heat shield with a cone type air filter.. Or maybe just an aftermarket intake box with a bigger filter.

With the x5m's it seems like besides a replacement filter NOBODY makes a completely replacement intake kit for this vehicle.. something with tubing, heat shield, bigger size filter etc..

While inspecting the x5ms engine bay and where the stock filters are and where the intake manifolds are.. it seems like an easy custom project of making some tubing to go from the engine intake manifolds to the front grilles.. something like this

My question is; is the hassle worth it? Will the turbo/engine improve a lot due to a bigger intake with cooler air.. ? Or is just a waste of time to mess with a car like this?

No, it won't improve the performance. You have a cold air intake. What you are referring to as a cold air intake is often actually worse, they take air from under the hood and so should be called warm air intakes. These devices are sold as underhood jewelry; they are designed to look good to those raising the hood, but they have no functional purpose.

CIA's on a Turbo motor really do not do any thing because your turbos will heat the hell out of any cold/hot air pre inter-cooler. The real only think you can do is reduce the restriction with filters but that may be minor

That intake system looks much like the MSR system for the F10 M5, which from every review, makes big gains and also allows you to hear the turbo and BOV better...and it's only like $2500

I wrote MSR and they don't produce anything for the X5M and their intake couldn't be adapted anyways since we've got more subframing in the way to prevent using it.

Something that could go straight from the grills to the turbos would be optimal for a complete straight shot, almost like the stock system is now, but we've got a much tighter space to fit a cone filter between the grill and radiator compared to the F10 M5. I found this on my Google searches, but looks like a rats nest mess that'd be completely prone to heat soak - VA-Motorsport Engineering - official KNAF rollcage manufacturer

I sell carbon scoops that direct air into the factory box just use some heat tape around the box and the airbox has enough volume for the small turbos

Yeah, I've read posts by 600hpS4...$350-$550 is a lot of money for something so simple and only proven by his butt dyno. Of all the pics over various threads, I've only seen one version. I suggested for that kind of money they should at least have an option for red, kind of like the scoops made by RPi or Mechunik/Bimmian...his replies were the typical "I cant be bothered, just buy them" tone he exhudes.

I don't have the means to rent a wind tunnel dyno. only way it will have true dyno proven results. many cars i have owned have had splitters/ scoops/ shrouds to direct air. Gtr all intercooler shrouds and airbox scoops. tons of car have it.

I'd assume you don't have a wind tunnel, a dyno session is easy...at this point you have an expensive product with no proof, just theory vs the other two sellers have dyno pics.

You got any pics of these?
