06 X3 Starts then stalls
Hey everyone, went out to start the x3 after a grocery run today and she starts, runs for 2 -3 seconds then dies. I've attempted to start her about 42 times all with the same result. I'm a noob when it comes to BMW engines and quirks so I'm here to ask if this has happened to anyone else?
In an attempt to play with the throttle to keep it running I did pin the pedal to the floor and that produced an odd scenario in that even with the throttle pinned to the floor I was idling ROUGH at around 400-600rpm. After releasing the pedal the engine died again, however on my next start I was able to throttle it to what ever RPM I desired via the gas pedal. I kept it at around 1.5-2K for the better part of a minute but once again when I released the pedal the engine died. See videos for start up and stall sequence and start up and throttle to keep it running then stall. I do have an OBDII bluetooth dongle that I use on some of my other Japanese vehicles w/ the torque app. I'm not totally positive that it works with BMW products, but it does say that it establishes a connection with the ECU and gives me info such as RPM, engine load, coolant temp, etc. So I'm assuming that it does in fact work fine. It however says there are ZERO DTC's when I check for fault codes. Any info is appreciated! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG6qQJDPn0c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0QV7Zzs0cg |
Have the fuel pump, coil and spark checked.

If any of those are bad would I still be able to keep it running via throttle? When I do keep it running and at 1-2k it seems to be running on all cylinders and not missing at all. Thanks! |
M54 engine - inspect the intake boot for cracks causing a vacuum leak
|
First basics to check... is it not getting fuel or not getting spark? Determine that and it will determine where to go next
|
Normally if there is a crack normally if there is a crack boot the first sign will be an uneven idle you might even hear whistling sound from the engine compartment

My wagon with an N52 engine (3.0) did something similar. it would crank and run but upon slowing down it would stall and die on me. it turned out for me that the Crank Position Sensor was kaput. changed it and no stalling for me. worth checking out if you can pull codes from the car. I used MyCarly from my phone and reconfirmed using the INPA software.

Suprised no one said to clean the icv

My 2004 X3 2.5i with 95K miles. Intermittent stalling 2-3 times year, then started right up and no problem for the next 4-5 months. Also occasional rough idle rpm. I suspected the ICV, then once removed, sure enough, dirt build-up is seen on the rotating valve. Cleaned with carb cleaner. All is well, engine is smooth now. PS: While there, I replaced the Intake Rubber Boot. The factory rubber boot from 2004 did not look to bad. Just minor cracks on the rubber tube leading to the ICV but no leak. |
