Nothing like the Bentley manual that I am aware of, but there may be something.

Look up the factory TIS if you like.

Here is the page for the transfer case oil change.

BMW TIS - 00 11 572 Changing oil in transfer box (ATC 400/500)

Whole thing here:

BMW TIS Online • 3' E83

the oil of the transfer case DOES not send any signal. The lamp on the board means a problem in the TC

I read through the BMW TIS that JCL posted (thanks). As per the TIS, can the self-adapting wear values in the transfer box control unit be deleted using INPA or GT1 required? I moved from an e39 to an 08 X3 3.0 so I'm not sure what software works on the X3.

Yes, BMW call for a reset when the fluid is changed. If not the dealer, then someone with the appropriate computer tool.

There is a transfer case Reset? I have changed my transfer case twice as preventative maintenance and never knew that there is a reset procedure...

It's part of the DIS software; there's a service function which allows you to say that the transfer case oil has been changed.

Just curious...

For the E53 X5, the transfer case is different between 2001-2003 (ATF) and 2004-2006 (Special BMW fluid).

Does anyone know if E83 X3 transfer case fluid varies from which year to which year?

The E83 used the ATC 400 transfer case (with x drive) from 2003 until 2010. There was a part number change during production. Same oil is listed for all years.

Thanks,

I currently own a 2006 X5, great vehicle.

Question for the X3, is there a year that is better than other year (such as transfer case issues etc. etc.), should I decide to buy an X3 in the future?

Within the E83 production (since this is the E83 forum, and I presume that the 2010+ F25 X3 isn't in the comparison) I would look for a 2007-2010 X3, which was the facelifted version, with the 3.0si (260 hp) engine. Up to 2006 there was a lower power M54 six (same 225 hp as the early X5) but the later ones are worth looking for IMO. All have the same awd system. And manual transmissions beat automatics every day and twice on Sunday. But then I'm biased.

Earlier X3s had a harsher ride, and some automatics had an issue with rough shifting.
