N62 after replacement valve cover gasket SES on, Engine Fail safe, loss of power etc

Hi,

I have a 2004 X5 4.4i with 80k, and have been burning oil recently (the notorious uncle buck- like clouds after stop lights). Decided to replace valve cover gaskets and did passenger side first (bank A?). found that half of the Eccentric sensor clip was broken, and i broke the half. I DUCT-TAPED the sensor plug in, but ever since the repair, I get SES light on, engine struggling under load at acceleration and going into Engine Fail-Safe program, but if I take it easy on the pedal, it will get up to 80 mph easy... Any idea what may be the issue? Do I have to replace the Eccentric sensor? it is very expensive...
I feel like i did something wrong when removing or re-inserting the servo motor or is the Eccentric shaft sensor not functioning properly as it is not 100% tight on...

I am afraid now to start on the other bank and perhaps do more damage...

Any help would be welcomed
I love the car, it's in great condition with such low milleage, I would like to keep it if it is not a money pit..
Thank you

If the vehicle is burning oil excessively then changing the valve cover gaskets is not going to help the situation. You have the N62 engine so more than likely you have the valve stem seal problem. Have them fix the eccentric sensor when you have the valve stems addressed. If you think the sensor eccentric was expensive wait till you do the valve stem seals. There are number of board members that can chime in on the cost of this expense.
