Replacing Valve Covers : PC : Oil : NOT Gasket
Swung by the Indy to poke his brain. Got this oil leak and he suggest that the it's leaking from the Mag Covers and suggest getting them Powdercoated.
A) Does Mag Covers like being PC. Aka, heat required during powdercoating, any issues with them warping B) Just short of having pretty covers, anyone replace their VC due to chasing a oil leak... C) Whaddya say is a fair rate for a set of covers. Found a set on CL |
Good day!!
Search function is great and I can honestly say I have learned a ton from using it... The covers have been "covered" a lot.. This is the most recent that I know of... Great info and I might be doing this very thing very soon!! https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ers-101-a.html Cheers!!! |
Saw that thread. That covers Bullet point A....
One could also do paint..... The Indy recommended PC from a functional perspective of sealing up the mag.. |
Good question... I haven't seen much on just paint... It is a good idea if it will hold... I think I'll pull a decent set from the PIY the next time I go and experiment... my 4.6is has painted VC's, but it is flaking really bad... I'm not sure what prep was done, if any to the covers...
I'll keep this post in mind when I get the covers and post the results... I'm sure someone will chime in with their results prior to my experiment tho... EDIT::: I replaced mine when I did the 2001 540i rebuild, but just because the set I had was really "corroded"... The replacements just looked better, not that the others weren't working... I could pull a set from the PIY and send to you... What are you driving? It's not a bad idea to include your vehicles in the signature block... Cheers!!! |
I had my VC's powder coated on my E38 and now over 1.5 years later and still look great and no leaks. They don't warp when done correctly.
|
I decided to bite the bullet..
Well, PC aside, I can't believe I'm spending less for 2 Mag VCG than 3 pieces of Interior Trim I decided to replace in the E53! |
I would like to get mine coated as well but my X has composite covers, I do have the V8 though. The L6 is probably metal?

Got the covers done
Whayya think http://i45.tinypic.com/24llb7s.jpg ........ I kid. But spring progress taking place I suppose. Got a set of used covers. Awaiting delivery before off to the PC |
I was gonna say - wifey better be sitting on face if you did that
|
The X is on some limited life anyhow and the trim covers on the side and center if redone in some sort of paint/dressing would probably make some more visual impact than the 3x6 area of exposed valve covers you see, ya know...

Good day!! Hey, ummmmmmm... I think you got the wrong ones... The customer that had these done chose PINK... Didn't you want that Estoril blue? Did you call them and let them know they mixed up the order? LOL!!! Oh, I tried to PM back, but message count was full on your end... Cheers!!! |
Will - Cleared some PM's.
I'm on the see-saw fence as I wait delivery - not a fan of color, I'm more a stealth sorta guy - Wrinkled Black or Wrinkled Cast Iron - Silver Vein - my pc guy told me to swing by as he has a couple variations in that -debated just DIY Plasti Hi Temp Wrinkle, but the prep time alone, I would rather just PC |
FYI. Refinishing the gasket groove is the key to a leak free cover. If you coat the groove with a wrinkle finish the gasket wont seal as well it would on a smooth finish and you'll end up again with a leaky cover.
Magnesium covers are hard to coat. If the surface has pitting or corrosion it will not accept the coating very well long term. |
10-4.
On my radar, is not only the groove, but the 2 sides of the channel, where it's metal on metal with no high points. I have yet to get the wiki on whether all of the mag has to be sealed once cleaned. As it comes from the factory, whatever paint they use, they def used it on the inside cover. Can't recall whether the channel was raw or not. For the inside, I was thinking of going on this direction. Glyptal 1201 Paint - The Eastwood Company |
PC sent me some pics of the covers today after being dipped clean and then lightly abraded. For a hot minute, I considered telling him to just PC clear it - no color. Me wonders how fast or not the raw finish would look before it oxidized. Days, weeks, hrs ...
|
I've PC'ed 5 or 6 sets of VC's for local guys. No issues. Runs about $275 and turn around time is a week on average. Make sure the people know beforehand that these are magnesium so they don't get the furnace too hot for too long. Nobody needs that fire.
Solvent dip them after bead or shell blasting them to get the oils out, acid etch lightly and powder away. You'll be happy. |
The silly/crazy thing is , the plastic covers like 85% of the VC. All you see is a 3"x4" area on each side. Fashion for only the owner who knows it's there, ya know.

I bought a set and had them sent to member here Danny Z.
His local man is going to powdercoat them Imola red. I'm excited because my set is leaking and dingy and needs new plugs. |
When I think of red , I think of Honda or a American musclecar

Damn. I want to see.

I always offer to match colors to the car or owner's choice but usually, they go for a stock looking color or a hammered or crinkled black or red.
I like the hammered surface in almost any color. http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k...pse9r6y0nv.jpg You could do 1 side red, the other side blue and paint the engine cover with the other bmw blue...? |
Plattus -
Sounds like you're a PC What's your take on white decals on red OE brembo calipers. Decal ontop of the clear OR decal under and then low heat cure clear ontop I'm debating... On the latter, with the decal under the clear, the white is not as vibrant as if it was left raw... To analogize, take raw alumimum wheels. Polish them to death. They have this insane clarity on raw polished Seal them with the best coating available. The mirror gloss is dialed back 2 nothches.... |
I like details so white on red is nice. I like clearing over the decals or just have them coated with "Ceramic Pro" particularly "wheel and caliper" then you'll be good for a long, long time.
|
Actually, the clearing over decal was moreso to mitigate white turing color and or them lifting..
I've had my BBKS dones both ways....prefer just decal ontop, as the white POPS, whereas when it goes under, there is a slight color difference. I guess you can't go wrong either way....all the BBK go downhill once the CC get's a chip or 2 in it. Re: CP. Not a fan but like food or colors, ~coatings~ are subjective I suppose. In a blind test, I preferred another manuf. |
