Do the transmission output shafts vary in diameter by year as well? Could they have installed the incorrect "year" output shaft?

That is a good question... I get a part number when looking on realoem dot com for the extension shaft for our 99-03 pre facelift X5's... It doesn't show a breakdown for the 04-06 version... It might be completely different... However, some other BMW's might use a different set-up...

Might know more when you pull the TC... If you have a camera handy, pictures would be well liked... Everyone loves pictures!!!

Cheers!!

This ISN'T your problem but on that year and model there was a bulletin to replace the neutral safety switch. When the car idles for 5 mins the car will go into limp mod and be stuck in 3rd gear. The switches were bad, the circuit boards went bad.

If yours has not been changed do so, they aren't expensive and just bolt on.

Thanks for the tip I will look into if it has been changed or not. Here's a video I took the other night of the clicking/grinding sound the TC does when in park. https://youtu.be/j5lDX4uP2yI

As soon as I get the TC out I'll upload some pics

Well it turns out that it was the output shaft that was the problem. But it wasn't that it was wrong, it was that I hadn't put in the entire shaft in. Here's how the trans shaft looked as soon as I pulled the TC off

As you can see it is missing most of the shaft. It should look like this

When I picked up the transmission I had not realized that I was missing the part of the transmission output shaft that pulls off. Is this called the output shaft
http://i64.tinypic.com/tarbt5.jpg
or is it the shaft that stays connected to the trans? Either way as soon as I went back to the shop and asked if they still had it, put it on and bolted everything back in the transmission worked like a charm! Thanks again to everyone for the input, especially Williamx5! Thank you sir!

Good day!!!

I actually think that extension piece is the input shaft of the Transfer Case... I'll have to look at my spare TC tomorrow... The spare 2006 automatic I have in the garage looks like your first picture... And, I think the part in the third picture did not originally come with the X5 from the factory... It would be a nice option to have... Is that the police edition?!

It is great you got it and didn't have to pull the trans again...

Thanks for updating so others will have a reference!!

Cheers!!!
