TPMS

In my previous vehicles, I have never worried about installing TPMS sensors. The light stays on for the 3 or 4 months that the winter tires are on. I check the pressure regularly, so no problems.

My question is, will the X5 panic if I don't have sensors in the winter wheels? You never know with all the electronics in these cars.

Depends on the type of TPMS you have in the X5. Most E53 models seem to have the indirect version that uses the ABS sensors on the wheels to calculate rotational differences to detect an under-pressure tire (and strictly speaking this is called FTM, not TPMS).

If yours has the indirect version, then all you need to do is the set function as per the owner manual when you change wheels.

Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how one feels about it)...the e53 used the DIRECT TPM/RDC tire pressure monitoring system up to a 4/04 build date...which means there are sensors in the wheels.

Im not sure what would happen other than the warning light being on constantly. You may find info about the affect of not having TPMS sensors on your winter set-up on BMW forums that uses the direct/RDC set-up. I've seen the topic come up on the e70 forums (bimmerfest/bimmerforum/xoutpost/xbimmer)...but didn't retain any of the info yet because it didn't really apply to my situation. I brushed it off as a bridge to cross in the future. :)

I can live with the light being on. I'm hoping that's all it does. The wheels are from an e53 (you remember that whole conversation I'm sure) but no sensors. They went to the original owners new tires.

I'll see if there is anything in the manual about it, but I bet it will be no big deal.
