E53 N62 chain replacement
 
Hi, it seems that my x5 have done almost 300k km with original chains, that are now stretched ... so it is time to change them. Now i am looking for different DIYs on that topic. As i understand if i want to change also oil pump chain, it means a lot more work, so i am not sure about that part. Some say to do that i also need to remove right cylinder head and oil pan, some say they have done that without removing right head, but you have to cut chain guide pin.

Please all info, own experience and criticism are welcome! Please send me links and info you can find on this topic, i would be very grateful!!!

Why is there a concern with chain stretch? Don't the tensioners account for any slack, and the VANOS accounts for any timing offset that might come with chain stretch? I'm pretty sure that's the case for the M54 engine, so why is the N62 different?

I did not deal with my oil pump chain at all on my M54, so I don't know about that one, but same questions.

^^^ Real questions here. I know the N62 is different in many ways, but still wonder why the things that make the M54 impervious to chain stretch would not apply here as well.

Of course i will be changing not only chain and i will use the whole timing chain set (https://aeromotors.ee/kataloog/search/99130340/swag). If i open oil fill plug, then i can lift the chain few mm which in not ok, the chain should be tight and can not be lifted. Also camshaft adaptation is getting out of range, because the chain is stretched and it is more harder to get timing in place and also sometimes i get error codes which often refer to stretched chain.
If it would be lot easier to just change timing chains a will change only them if i will have not to remove oil pan and right head to do that, because as i understand there is no much pressure on oil pump chain so it is not so critical. By the way the oil pump was changed by dealer 7 years ago and then they did not change the oil pump chain.
So i will continue my search and gather info as much i can so i can perform this work with my buddy mechanic.

This is not common for n62. I would suggest checking chain tensioners way before replacing chains.
