starter rating woes fro x5 3.0d 160kw

Right probably everyone sick of my posts, but got a new one to add, can anyone confirm to me what starter motor rating for the 3.0d is best? being 2.2kw or the 2.0kw rating (factory spec)

One starter company person I spoke to (not sales dept) said that the 2.0kw is underpowered, any ideas? can't actually do any harm can it?any replies much appreciated

There will be pro and cons to either. Using 10% more power for every start is a bad thing when you start a lot with short trips. More power will help when it's cold no doubt but a new starter will prob deliver 50-100%, more power than you have with the damaged starter.

I would love to see the inside of the starter if you are up to opening it up like the video shows.

Ok andrewwynn thanks for heads up... did some(alot) more research and there is a mix of views and on offer both 2.0 and 2.2 kw..place i am trying to source starter from now suggests 2.2kw is preferable, whilst herth+buss techincal people despite selling a 2.2kw rated one say the 2.0kw is still within tolernaces....be ironic though if replacing current lazy starter i still end up with having to do regular battery top ups due to my driving style, simply cos I have put in a 2.2kw rated one....

All will be revealed....for sure i will ask for old stsrter back and post images or vid on its deconstruction..as for replacement im eiher going for unlabelled remy(item comes from remy factory but isnt labelled as such,so much cheaper)...or herth+buss apparently they source from denso, online ebay & other listings show item as a denso with herth and buss label, but no ebay or other seller can actually tell me wot will be in box! They tell me no idea wot herth buss put in box! And after exeperience locally can believe it....herth buss box...inside was a bosch starter with a herth buss label....called em.in germany told me its correct but old stock we dont rollout/use bosch anymore the bore size was wrong in any case wouldnt fit! Instead they use denso as per their online catalogue, and when i purchase I should get this .....nuts that ebay sellers cant actually confirm wot i see in their listing is wot i will get if i purchase...right.mind to complain or ask em to open the box and see and tell me before i commit to buy!

While Andrew is correct in pointing out that the 2.2kW will draw more power than than the 2.0kW starter, I do wonder if the extra load is going to be the difference between needing the regular top-up charge or not. I reckon that given your (VERY) short regular trips, you may well be faced with the top-up charging regardless of which starter you end up fitting.

I have tried to figure out what distance is needed for a "break-even" trip on my 3.0d, in terms of battery charge. While I don't have any actual figures to back up my conclusion (like battery specific gravity, starting load etc.) I have found that unless I'm travelling something like 20kms each trip to recover the charge used at start-up, I end up having to top-up charge the battery after a week or so. At least in the winter anyway, with near-zero degree starts two or three times per day. Summer is WAY better.

I guess in Cyprus, it'll be a lot warmer and so you may not have to travel as far, the start-up load being less.

The maths on this doesn't help much. If you assume the battery has 100AH capacity and the start-up load is 300Amps (starter, plus glow-plugs etc.) for 5 seconds, that equates to around 0.4% of the total battery capacity (100Ah/300Amps = 20mins; 20mins/5secs = 100/240 = 0.4%).

Of course, this is without de-rating the battery to allow for internal resistance etc. De-rating figures for car batteries are hard to find but could be as high as 50% i.e. when delivering 300Amps the 100AH battery may only deliver 50AH. This could raise the charge usage for start-up to near 1% but this still seems too low for what I have observed in real-world usage.

Maybe my battery is on the way out too and the actual capacity is WAY lower than I am calculating. :dunno:

I suspect that part of the answer lies in the E53's issues with low voltages - it needs a GREAT battery for reliable operation, not just a good one.

Cheers wpoll the ebay bods a really p**sing me off , telling me they cant actually verify or confirm what they have listed & shown in listing as being for sale will be identical to what I will receive! so looking like I will go for one from this chap in the UK below...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-X5-E53-...R/142864081505

the part fits to your car.
The item is new and the picture is the original Picture of H&B. I cant tell
you whats inside the box, if there is an Denso or another starter inside. It
depends on Herth&Buss.

best regards

The photo is the original.
We don't know who the manufacturer is.

Hi Andrew attached is best I could upload given restrictions on size...initially auto electrician told me it was salvageable, then said wasn't and then before I had left and after a new one was installed said it could be. I prefer not to recon it as don't think it will be quite up to the speed of the 2.2kw rated one i have now, plus can you see there are signs of wear..boy has the new one made a difference to this old denso that was struggling. I have never heard the x5 start so well.. As you say though remains to be seen if this 2.2kw has an impact on my battery health due its higher rating and coupled with my lame driving.....
