This will be a long and ongoing thread due to other obligations before I can really concentrate on this install. But I wanted to get the ball rolling, plus start a thread with information regarding questions some have been asking about the head unit.

Keep in mind I am installing a sort of "dream" system to relive my youth. This is all the stuff I could not afford when I was young. The stuff I would drool over at the audio stores. I really enjoy good audio and no factory system has done what my aftermarket setups have done. This system is completely over the top, nonsensical, and impractical. I am aware. This is not a primary vehicle. I don't need to haul things in it.

Equipment/Gear

1. Head Unit

Model: HL-1039GB 8.0 Generic Ebay 10.25" Android 8.0 (Oreo). Purchased for $419.52. I got additional monies off from one of Ebay's 15% off promotions. This particular seller was pretty communicative during the sales process, though I did not ask any detailed questions. They pro-actively asked if I had Nav and/or DSP. Asked if I wanted to buy the extension harness for the Nav vehicles (~$40 I think it was). I said no thanks, I'll make my own. They sent it in the box anyway... YMMV. So that was a nice bonus.

I did a quick test fit in my parts truck X5 since it already had the Nav removed. Fitment is good... though VERY tight. I will grind about 1/16" off the stock mounting frame plastic to allow for ZERO gap at the bottom of this unit. I am excited after seeing it in there... this screen is huge. I am not sure what the glare is going to look like though. Probably not great based on the angle. For those concerned with that... keep it in mind. For that screen real estate, it does not bother me in the slightest. :D

2. Amplifiers

(2) JL Audio 500/5 V1. 5 channels each. Will push the interior speakers minus the dash speakers which will be powered by the head unit. Going to maintain all 12 channels of audio as currently installed with the DSP setup.

(1) JL Audio 1000/1 V1 This will push the sub obviously. And push it hard.

3. Subwoofer

12" Ascendant Audio Havoc dual 2ohm voice coil sub. I think this is rated @ 900w RMS? Have used it in another vehicle and was able to flex the roof on that (did this once during a demo). This is not the goal of this installation... I am an SQ installer and not an SPL installer. I prefer very clean, clear, crisp audio. Sub is going into a sealed ~1.4 ft^3 box. Will finalize the volume during the installation. Certainly no bigger than 1.5 ft^3 and no smaller than 1.25ft^3.

UPDATE 2/4/19

Okay, this weekend was busy... though in typical fashion I did not get as much done as I had hoped. Big thanks to Mouse for coming down here to help with the project (he had other reasons for coming regarding his X but I'll let him share should he desire). First, last week I got the rear camera installed. Went with the same one Crowz (thanks for the writeup) and Overboost did. Haven't seen it in action yet as I have not built my trigger circuit for it though all the parts did show up from DigiKey. I will be doing that this week.

First, I tested the head unit in the truck using the extension harness provided with the unit. Worked great. Seems they provide a provisionary harness for retaining the radio unit in the rear to interface with the DSP amp and trigger it. At least that's what it appears to me. They also have some other harnesses in there that I was not going to use so cleaning up the harness became the second order of business.

After that I gutted the truck very similar to the Avin install in my previous X5. I of course took the opportunity to clean everything that was under the seats and trim. The wife gave the nappa leather a full detail while the seats were out. They feel much softer and look cleaner now. Thanks honey! ;)

It's always interesting what you find. Found ~$1.50 in change and a Sports Authority sales receipt for a pop-up canopy from 2008 in Utah. That must have been the original owner as that is where this truck was first sold as new. Also learned what type of food and toys his/her children enjoyed back then. ;puke;

Next I started running the harness and wrapping everything in Tesa tape. Including re-wrapping some of the OE harnesses as I can not stand that "juicy" slick adhesive residue that coats the wires after heat bakes it. Gross.

From the C pillar the wires follow the same path used in my Avin install thread. So reference that if you are interested in running wires along the factory path under the carpet and into the center console.

With the wires run it was time for some sound deadening. Didn't go ham with it but tried to get the sides as they flexed a lot before with the BSW sub setup and would rattle the gas cap. I don't want that with this setup.

Then we started building the storage area that will be underneath the load floor. It will have a decent amount of storage down here as there is about 4" of clearance until the bottom of the load floor. I'll store the first aid kit, jumper pack, quick detail towels, and the like down here. OE load floor will be cut and hinged to allow full access to battery and this storage area.

That's it for the pictures on this update. We did some more sound deadening and some random things as we were pretty much out of time. We did get the head unit temporarily installed but it will be coming back out to do the Resler interface and the front camera (which I still have not settled on :rolleyes:).

I will get pics of the head unit in the truck soon. It seems to work really well. It's fast, responsive, and connects to my phone's hotspot very well. Streamed YouTube with no issues at 720p. I imagine 1080p would be difficult in most locales due to how much America's wireless carriers suck at infrastructure investment. But that's a rant for another thread.

Steering wheel controls are working out of the box with the canbus box they provided. It's mounted where the factory Sirius box goes in the electronics area in the back. It's that reddish colored thing in some of the pictures. Antenna reception seems acceptable though I have no audio to verify with, the auto seek works well and picks up the stations I would expect it to without me having to manually tune to them. Final verdict on that after installing speakers and amps. That's it for this update. 2 AM and it's bed time. :yawn:

UPDATE 2/10/19

Wired in the PDC reverse camera control circuit. Everything works as planned. Wiring looks mostly neat and tidy and OEM(ish). So hopefully I am done in the rear electronics box under the compressor. Hopefully.

Here are some pictures of the final look at the module box and how well the backup camera looks on the head unit. Looks like I have double parking assist lines. I will have to see if they can be disabled in the head unit. If not I can cut the wire at the camera in the back. Also included a more clear picture of the actual clarity of the screen. Postimage downgrades the image quality a little bit and in person the screen is sharper than pictured... but you should get the idea. I am excited to get this thing 100% functional and just start playing around with it.

Update 4/1/19

Okay, got some more work done. Had a friend here for another weekend of work (to protect the guilty, we'll nickname him House)... and drinking... oh my god the drinking. LOL, we got nothing done Friday night and stayed up until 4:30 AM drinking with the wife here at the house. Saturday the wife and I were back up at 8:30 with the kids. He... was not. ;) So, while he was out of commission, I decided to carpet the storage area I had built for under the rear tray. Came out pretty well if I do say so myself.

After I got that done I decided to start building the box. Came out swimmingly and has an interior volume of ~1.18ft^3. With some polyfill the sub should be very happy and punchy in there. It down fires into the floor as I did not want to worry about things hitting it in the back. I left myself some decent usable space back there considering the amount of equipment going in.

Before I finished the box. Mo... I mean House had recovered from the previous night and joined me around 7:00PM to finish box construction and flange cutting for the sub. Then, to his horror, I asked him to help me run the rear load floor through the table saw. HAHA he could not believe I was going to just rip cut this thing. You can see how it turned out above in the two pictures. Will have a piano hinge along the entirety of the seam so should hinge easily/smoothly. I think I am going to recarpet it though to hide the hinge. Don't think it will be easy, or possible, to find something matching the OE material so it will probably be speaker box black like the lower compartment. After that we called it a night and worked on his X5 that night and on Sunday. Big thanks to him for the assistance as always.

Did you originally have the factory nav?

Yes, original Nav and DSP. Car was fitted at some point by PO with BSW speakers. Need to investigate during installation to see how many of the speakers have been changed. Front doors for sure as I've had those panels off for regulator repairs.

Thanks for the link. If I have an issue with it I'll definitely check it out. Ditching DSP completely though... so hopefully it's not a problem. Using name brand shielded wiring and such. We'll see. :dunno:

Does the unit have any way to be resetted in case it freezes or something (with out shutting off the car)? I can see two little tab looking thing on both bottom sides and the right one seems to have two pinholes.

Yes, the one on the left is a physical button. The one of the right appears to be a hard reset requiring a thin wire or the like to reach the button that sits behind the face plate.

What does the left button do?

I'm debating on this exact unit or the other one I posted on my other thread which has the touch buttons on the bottom of the screen.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer to that yet. I did not hit it during the testing and it is unlabeled. If I were to hazard a guess, and hoping for intuitive design, maybe a home button. Or an app switch/close type button. Those seem like they would be the most handy physical button. But I am just speculating.
