Highest mileage 4.8iS

Where is your mileage?
I'm low, at 133k and climbing slowly. kinda unsure if I should keep it. It's been ok so far.

What's your mileage?
What's the highest you've seen on a 4.8iS?

If possible, please list any major repairs you've had to do. Like we know valve stem seals are a given, but what have you had to repair.
Like I've had to send my valve body out for a rebuild. I think I'm gonna have to do a driveshaft U joint soon. What have you had to do?

Thanks.

LoL no worries, I am guessing you're out of San Antonio. How's your X5 doing? I haven't been back to the land of the big PX since 2008. Some parts are crazy cheap and easy to get here but so far NOT the ones I needed.

Thank you for your service fellas. EOD... You're braver men than I.

EODguy 12-11-2018 12:22 AM

No thanks is necessary. Besides where else do you get to blow stuff up AND have people thank you for it, sometimes even the cops!!

Fact.
That's a long time out of the us man. Yeah, stationed in SA. Trying to get to Europe one of these days.

So far it's been great. Since I had he valve body rebuilt the wife has fallen in love with it again.
Gotta figure out my AC issue, and I'm pretty sure a U joint or two is shot.

That's why I'm wondering about miles, sometimes I wonder if I should keep it, or move on to something that can take more abuse without breaking the wallet.

Yeah I do. I am thinking I want to do some suspension work like you did also.
I also want to lower it some more, but if I don't keep it. Why do all that. I'm so torn.

That's the thing with BMW's... every 100,000 to 140,000 miles you are going to have to spend $2000-$3000 in parts to keep it "tip top." But the time in between those major services is just oh so good and why the wife and I can't drive anything else... and we've tried.

Exactly. I know nothing else will drive like it, but damn if they don't need more attention and money than the average car.
I do miss my diesel truck tho, the wife too.
I would love an E70 X5M, but they seem as high maintenance as the damn E60 M5. We really need an SUV of some type to haul that big ass dog and the kid. That or a large truck again.
I'm so torn.
Few things look better than a lower X5 iS, but I need to be able to tow my bike to the race track too. Not sure if I trust the X5 to do that regularly. Lol.

While the X5 was down due the valvebody she was driving the ole beater 330 zhp. She got back into the X5 and was telling me she forgot how much better it drivers. Better brakes, and overal generally better ride.
Even tho the zhp is on coilover and has the quickest steering of all 3 cars.
I think the zhp being an auto is why.
I fixed the X5 and left town the next day.
But lately I've been thinking I should keep it, lower it on coilovers and a cat back, or resonator delete.
I think I'm gonna see how it is over the summer while I'm deployed. If it doesn't act up while I'm gone I will keep it.
If it does. I may ditch it.

Right now, my spark plug tubes on the driver side bank are leaking.
The oil cooler gasket leaks when its cold out, and I wanna refresh the rear end suspension.
I may try to do the valve covers and tubes before I deploy. If I have time.

^My wife LOVES my 4.8is compared to her x35d. She loves the way it drives and accelerates compared to the FI diesel. If yours weren't black I'd say let me know when you were thinking of selling. :) We need a third vehicle, though I was looking at an e61 wagon or e39 wagon, but another 4.8is could be nice. ;)

Lol. Yeah black cars suck. I said never again after I washed the X5 the 1st time and what do i do? I ended up with a black zhp.
I'm waiting on a local cat to build an E39 M5. I told him dibs already. If I get that, I'm selling the M3 and maybe the X5 if I can get a OEM hitch for the 5er.
Zhp is gonna go regardless.

I was checking out deleted and tuned X5 35d on YouTube the other day. That shit is tempting. At this point I think the decided factor on the X5 will be how well the transmission acts this summer.

I’m at 163k miles. Approx $15k in maintenance since 65k miles. I’ve owned for about 6-7 years. Most dependable ride I’ve had. Maintenance cost is strictly parts; from fluids to wipers. I have been able to diy all of my repairs. Great DD IMO

snik 12-14-2018 09:52 AM

lol. $15k? I never ever tally up totals spent on vehicles. That shit is madness. I can't handle the truth, so I don't seek the truth.

^I'm in the midst of tallying up my spend for the 4.8is. It's not looking pretty. But mine includes mods so that drives up the figure in a hurry.

i got my records logged into excel, it automatically calculates the totals...

i'm into it $37k including purchase price.. so approx $500 a month to drive. those avg's will go down the longer I own the vehicle (or up if anything big happens).. haha

crystalworks 12-14-2018 06:14 PM

^$500/mo. Yikes, that's ~$32000 new car payment at 0-1% interest. Haha, I hope my 4.8is treats me gentler than that... or rather treats my wallet easier. ;)

itscoo2pyopants 12-14-2018 06:37 PM

Break
My
Wallet

yes, does seem like a lot. but if you think about it, what new "cheap" car would you rather be driving?

snik 12-14-2018 09:03 PM

Never put the cost.
I track maintenance of my vehicles too. I don't put the amount I spent.

I am tracking what I'm spending on my ZHP tho. Just because that's a project I plan to flip shortly. Otherwise. I don't wanna know.

Depending on where you look for the value, I dropped 2-3x the value of mine in maintenance and repairs last year. But the damn thing runs. It feels brand new. It looks like a car 1/2 its age and 1/3 the miles.

Today's milestone is nothing compared to some of them in this thread, but I'm hoping it's ab 1/2 of what I get before I do it all again!

Wow. That's a lot. Have you owned it since new?
How has it been, any major failures or repairs?
Are they very rare in Germany?
I've never seen one there in all my visits.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

blabla30 12-17-2018 03:41 AM

No, I´m not the first owner. I bought it with 210k km. Should be 130k miles.

The IS is quite rare, yes. I own it for 2 or 3 years and I have seen maybe 3 of it. The gas price here is 1,5€/L-->6,4$/per gallone. Maybe that´s a reason why ;)

Already repaired was the valve steams with all gasket which came off to the job, Gasket at the Alternator, Xdrive, Front bearings at the wheels, their driveshafts, Air compressor, air struts, brakes complete front and rear.

snik 12-17-2018 06:58 AM

Nice. Doesn't sound like you've had anything crazy happen.

I'm at 248,900km (154659miles)
Its currently due for dreaded alternator seal and the valve seal right now.
I don't know if I want to keep the 4.8IS or fix it or sell it (I do have the parts for the alternator seal, but not for the valve seal).
But every time I looked at other suv's, I keep looking at the other e53's....
Maybe, I should just fix it by myself and be happy with it......

Yep. It's hard to find. Suitable replacement. Unless you go with a much newer more expensive X5M, or cayenne turbo or something.
