Brake Squeak In Reverse Only

2006 3.0. Changed my brakes about 10k miles ago. New Zimmerman rotors and new Akebono ceramic pads. Recently they've started to squeak when backing up. Only when backing up. This is my second set of ceramic pads on this truck and I've never had this issue before. Anyone have any ideas as to why in reverse only? Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, I have the same issue on my 4.4 with akebono ceramic on OEM rotors. Only in reverse. It's bizarre. But I love them as no more brake dust for weeks upon weeks of driving and performance is OK.

Did you use anti squeak under the pads when installing? I've fixed a few squeaky pads recently by redoing them with anti squeak under the pads.

You mean on the back side of the pads, not on rotor contact surface? Yes, I did apply the brake paste that came with the pads. May be I should re-apply more. I have OEM paste, may be that'll work better. But why only squeaks in reverse? Wonder what physics is at play here.

I always use the "brake quiet" sprays (the sticky ones) on the back of pads worth good results. I only get slight squealing afte rain for a short period.

Out of curiosity, do you guys grease the sides of the pads where it contacts the calipers? I never have but see it mentioned on all the mainstream brake guides/how tos.

Brake squeak comes from the pad vibrating by grabbing and letting go like when you wet your finger and rub the top of a wine glass.

I used the anti squeak grease that came with the pads. I'm thinking I may pull them and use the sticky anti-squeal if it keeps up.

Grease that comes with is for the sliding parts not under the pads.

It's like thread lock it turns semi solid and prevents the pad from vibration. If you put grease under the pad it would do the opposite and hep it vibrate.

iíve got akebonos and have the same thing. squeaks occasionally in reverse.

the pads are sweet though. not quite as grippy as the stockers but the lack of black dust, oh my! and still, i would say...90% as good. definitely fine for my needs.
