Reusing factory sub box with aftermarket sub

Hi all, I'm sure I have seen on this forum about people removing their Tony factory DSP sub speakers and cutting open box more and installing MDF to front and dropping a sub in there.
I can't find the threads anymore from a Google search (perhaps searching for wrong words) so I'm hoping someone here can point me in right direction?
I've bought 2 factory sub boxes from a junked and I was hoping to perfect it before I do it on my OWN DSP subs that I no longer cause I have an aftermarket sub and box IN the boot, but would have concealed away in side (yes I know I will loose quality and volume of sub, but it's really just.an experiment)

Hey CW, what my buddy did, wish I had pics to make it more clear... is he removed the two factory speakers and then traced the flat area where they were and made a plate out of 3/8 birch to fill that area and level it off with the raised portion there towards the bottom of the factory box. Once he had that all caulked and sealed he put a 1/4 piece of "hardboard" across that entire top surface, the birch he put in and the lip of plastic at the bottom, sealed all the ridges, bumps and any gaps with construction adhesive and let it dry for a few days and sanded it smooth.

Once it was all set up he cut the hole in it and squeezed a 10" Dual VC speaker in there with a crap ton of poly fill. Actually sounded decent when he was done too! He gutted the factory plugs, etc while he had the hole cut for the speaker and was able to reach in.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear.
I may make pics during my journey on the rebuild.
I will reuse the factory plug harness for my 2 wires too. May as well.

Also, what's the point of the Poly fill material? Does it get rid 9f unwanted noise or some stuff by acting as a filter or dampner?
And I assume you are referring to the fluff material put into sub boxes, correct?

You nailed it, poly fill actually reduces the speakers "reflection time" in the box and makes it think it's in a bigger enclosure so you get a better response from the speaker and less "rattle".

Purplefade, did your friend drop in a shallow mount OR normal sub? I've.got brand new DVC subs that are 5.5" deep and need some clearance behind to allow the pole clearance.
I'm hoping to avoid buying anything and working with current inventory.

I want to say he used a Pyle 10", I think his was 4.75" ish, but he did that because he had the speaker not necessarily because he didn't have the space. The good news is that by building up that lip you actually give yourself more depth than you think you have. - To be honest, you'll have to get it built and before you cut the hole take some rough measurements for central depth, because it will also matter where you place the speaker higher or lower.

Worst case, if you don't mind using an external grill on the cargo panel ( I don't know that I'd cut mine, but I may buy a salvage and cut it ) you could always add an additional layer of plywood, to the face of the box to increase the depth.

EDIT - Or if you happen to have the space between the face of the box and the cargo panel, maybe you can add that thin layer and not cut the panel.. maybe.

I'd prefer not to cut the BMW panel, but if I find a beige spare from a junk yard, I'd cut that one up.

That’s where I was with that too... don’t think I’d chop up my original but if I could find one salvage, chop chop chop for sure. Fingers crossed you’ve got all the space you need and it isn’t even an issue.
